I found food prices to be very comparable to the US. Check out the local farmers' markets which are held everyday at different town. They have great and fresh vegies and other ready-to-eat food items.

I found a book on Amazon.com called THE FOOD AND WINE LOVER's COMPANION TO TUSCANY by Carla Capalbo. It was revised in 2002. It is "a complete insider's handbook that will lead you to hundreds of gastronomic delights, including Restaurants, trattorias, osterias, enotecas, wineries, olive oil producers, cheesemakers.....plus a wealth of village markets, food festivals, courmet food stores, kitchen shops, bakers, cooking classes.

What more could you need? Yes, I bought it for a little over $13 (reg. 19). Tried several book stores in my large town and couldn't find.
I will be exceedingly jealous of all of you as I will be a captive in a tour bus riding through Tuscany for 8 days. I'm sure that I have never gone that long without cooking...but I'm sure I WILL survive. Maybe I will pass on several museums and explore markets instead and if the bus leaves without us because I had my nose in a dried porcini bin, I will have at least one bottle of wine to tide me through.
Good luck and buon appetito!
