I can think of plenty of places where I would seek smart medical advice. A travel board is not one of them. However, it is possible that someone might offer a decent recommendation for a doctor, based on personal experience.

There are numerous English-speaking doctors in Florence. Most hotels have their own list, as well as the Tourist Office. Seeing a doctor in Italy is affordable. It's the first thing I would do if I needed medical help or advice.

An anti-anxiety drug (-pam family) is not the same as needing your heart medication refilled. You can try going to a pharmacy, but my guess is you will need to see a doctor, who is willing to give you an Italy prescription to fill.

I think the idea of asking a counselor or teacher in your program for a referral to a medical doctor, would be the most straight-forward path to a solution.

Basically one piece of advice that is good - see a doctor and get a proper prescription.

Or maybe the Italian pharmacy could email her prescription filling place back home - if she has refills on file they could send a copy of the prescription to Italy.

No. She needs a prescription from an Italian doctor.

Clonazepam is a tranquilizer and may cause dependence...so I suspect (but don't know how things work in Italy) that a prescription will be required.

But, if the OP has the original bottle, the RX number, RX provider, RX provider's phone number (usually), and prescribing doctor's name will be on it, so a doctor (or pharmacist) would be able to check on its legitimacy and the OP should--I expect--be able to get a refill/renewal through the usual local procedures.

If not in the original bottle, it might be more difficult.

When we travel to Europe, we take copies of our RX provider's list of meds, dosages, RX numbers, etc., which for most meds should be sufficient, but with controlled substances (such as Vicodin, which I take for back pain on the plane), I also carry the original bottle.

I don;t know about drugs in this class in Italy but in the US this prescription cannot legally be refilled. Each prescription must be an original and a copy filed with the federal government as well as the state. And if the MD prescribes too many Rxs they may be investigated for illegal distribution of controlled substances.

That is why I recommended contacting the patient's MD in the US - who already knows the patient well and their tolerance for this medication - which can vary tremendously.

(And sorry if this offends anyone - but as mentioned above this is not like getting a refill for an antihypertensive.)
