Preliminary planning for trip to Puglia in Late April/early May

Hello all:

I am beginning to plan a 12 day trip to Puglia in late April/early May. I have the books and have read several trip report on this forum (thanks to all) and elsewhere.

Key point is that I will NOT be driving, which presents some challenges, but not impossible. My interests are art, architecture, history and general exploring. While I am in no way a beach person, I enjoy staying in towns on the sea.

Here is my preliminary itinerary:

Bari (which itself only requires one day, but s a good transportation hub for day trips): 4 days with day trips to Matera, Alberobello/Martina Franca, possibly Trani

Polignono: 4 days with day trip to Ostuni, Monopoli

Lecce: 4 days with day trips to Otranto, Gallipoli

What do you think? I can extend the trip by 3-4 more days if necessary – If I do, what should I include? Any suggestions for alternative itinerary?

Best regards … Ger

It's easy to combine Alberobello with Castellana Caves.
Polignano is close to Bari. You could visit Ostuni, Monopoli and Egnazia from Bari as well.
What about the northern part: Vieste Gargano, Termoli and may be Tremiti Islands?

I think Trani is seriously underrated. As you note, it's easy to reach from Bari.

You might consider spending at least one night, if not two, in Matera.

Enjoy!

Thanks kja, you always give me good advice.

Based on both kja and Neckervd comments, I am now playing with extending the trip from 12 to 16 days.

Regards … Ger

Be sure to look carefully at the bus and train schedules to determine your day trips. With extra days added, I second staying a couple nights in Matera.
