Praiano in October...help!
My fiance and I have just booked our honeymoon, 7 nights in Praiano on the Amalfi coast from October 9-17. We liked the look of Praiano as it looks like authentic Italy, not some overrun tourist-trap as the rest of the coast can be!
What I was wondering is, do the ferries still run from Positano to Capri in early October? I've heard that there is even the possibility of arranging a boat to pick you up in Praiano to bring you to Positano to catch the Capri ferry-- does this still happen in October? I can't seem to find anything about it. I really want a day trip to Capri and was wondering the best way to get there.
Also, has anyone ever gone to Pompeii from Praiano/Amalfi? How did you get there and about how long did it take?
Any advice would be much appreciated!!

Hi CMac - Pompeii from Praiano?
Take the SITA Sorrento bus (- via Meta), and get off at META station (- 40 mins).
[This is the nearest stop on the Circumvesuviana to Positano - the bus stops at Meta station].
From META it's 25 mins on the train to Pompeii Scavi.
This is the quickest public transport option on the outward journey. It will normally save 30 minutes over going via Sorrento ...
For the return journey, however, it is advisable to return by train from Pompeii to Sorrento (- rather than getting off at Meta). The bus starts from Sorrento station and usually fills up there - so that way you're sure of a seat.
Get bus tickets in advance from the station shop - and
* don't forget to validate them on boarding ...
Yes - ferries/hydrofoils still run to Capri from Positano in October.
Positano is only a 15 mins bus ride from Praiano.
You could probably get a private boat transfer from Praiano to Positano ... at a price
Hope this helps ...

Hi Eks - The Meta route is one option from Amalfi - but slow (- 75 mins bus ride to Meta, plus train).
But there are a couple of other options:
- Boat to Salerno (35 mins), then train to Pompeii (20 mins).
www.trenitalia.com
OR
- Bus direct to Pompeii. This is the Amalfi-Naples service - but it's a once a day service, I think:
http://www.sitabus.it/sitabus/campan...STIVO_2007.pdf
[The return looks OK (- dep Pompeii 16.50; arr. Amalfi 18.15)
The outward journey is very early - 06.15]
You could go one way and come back another ...
Hope this helps ...

Steve that is fantastic information. Many thanks!
What do you think of my tentative new plan to skip Sorrento and split my week between Amalfi and Naples (visiting Pompeii from Amalfi)? (The original plan, which included a peek at the Cilento peninsula, has fallen by the wayside due to lack of time...)

Sounds good to me, Eks - even though I'd personally choose Sorrento over Naples. But then I'm not a big city person ...
I'd visit Pompeii from Naples, though, rather than from Amalfi. It's only a 30 mins train ride - much easier ...
You could do a day-trip to Cilento, couldn't you?

Steve, thanks again. Yes I could do the Cilento day trip but that would mean renting a car, I guess. So I would be back to that dilemma! I know that I can go to Paestum by public transport from Amalfi, but I also like the idea of those mozzarella farms near Battipaglia...I suppose there is the option of using one of those often-mentioned drivers for that...
I have a question about day trips with a driver that I will ask on another post....thanks!
