Prague - May 1st
We will be in Prague next year on May 1. I know that is a holiday in Prague, but can anyone tell me if most shops and attractions are closed on May 1? If so, is there anything available that would be interesting to visit or see in Prague during that time. Thanks so much for your help.

Hi folks,
May Day, May 1, is a major holiday throughout Europe.
All of the workers march with red flags if they are Communists, black flags if the are Anarchists and red/black flags if they are Anarchosyndicalists.
It's like Sunday, only more so.

Not that I know anything, but having been there recently and seeing how quickly they have seen and learned the ways of capitalism, I can't believe tourist areas will be closed.
We were in the Czech Republic and Hungary. I was quite concerned about language since I normally learn a few basic words. No way!!!
Everybody providing almost any kind of service (except in the train station) spoke English and well!!!

Speaking English isn;t the point.
May 1 is Labor Day - and unlike in the US where the labor movement has completely atrophied it is still taken very seriously in much of Europe - which after all still has socialist (Labor) parties. Some tourist places may be open - but this is the equivalent of the Fourth of July in many places.
I would look at the web sites of the major tourist sites to see if they are open.

nytraveler,
I was only making a point of the fact that they have become very much visitor/tourist wise.
If May 1st is the only day you'll be there, that's one issue. If you'll be there for several days then I'm sure there will be enough to do.
Just our of curiosity I checked the Jewish Museum of Prague and they say:
"The museum is open every day except Saturdays and Jewish holidays".
I assume that unless May 1st is on one of the above it will be open. Visiting the sights of this very well organized presentation takes several hours.
Since it's between the Old Town Square and Charles Bridge you could spend a whole day just on those alone. And then there's wandering.
I can't see one day being an issue.
