My friend & I are travelling to Prague from 27 December through 4 January. We are in our early 30s & are travelling alone. Can anyone recommend a place to stay near the St Charles Bridge that is safe and affordable?

Im looking for a place that has 2 beds, its own bathroom and is clean. Id like to spend less that $175 USD per night if possible.

I was in Prague in April and we stayed at Pension Dientzenhofer on the Mala Strana side of Prague very close to the bridge. It is a great location and a really wonderful place to stay. There are many favorable reviews on this website- that is how I learned of the pension. Prague is amazingly wonderful.

The Three Ostriches (U Tri pstrosu)and the Bishop's House are both close to the Charles Bridge.

I stayed at Bishop's House and it is very clean, en suite, has 2-bed rooms, decent breakfast and is less than $175/night. Also, they will give you 10% off the price of your stay if you pay cash. The Bishop's House (there are two buildings across the street from each other = Bishop's House and Bishop's House II, named for the archbishop's residence that used to be on that land) is literally about 60 steps' walk from the Charles Bridge, but is tucked onto a small side street so the Bridge noise is no factor.

The Cloister Inn is about four blocks from the Charles Bridge in a safe area. It fulfills all your requirements, and I think you can get it for less than $150 per night. I stayed there two years ago and loved to eat at the Café Flambée at 5 Husova which is near the Cloister Inn. I think the same kitchen serves the expensive restaurant in the basement and the inexpensive café at street level. You can do a search, or I can look for the e-mail address if you can't find their website.

I stayed at the Hotel Betlem. I think we paid about $100 a night when the euro was close to 1:1. My cousin and I were also 30, and we thought it was a great little hotel, close to the bridge, clean, and decent breakfast.

I also recommend the Pension Dientzenhofer in Mala Strana, about 5 minute walk from Charles Bridge. We stayed there last Oct and loved it! We paid about $125 per night, with private bath, including breakfast.

If you want to browse through a variety of properies, both Hotels and Apartments, check out a company called "Rent in Prague" (google it). We used them for our trip there last New Years and found them very efficient. They'll also arrange for a pick up at the airport. It'll be like a fairytale at that time of year.

You might want to check out the Balthasar, a relatively new place, very close to the Charles Bridge. We haven't stayed there, but it's a sister hotel (brother hotel?) to the Domus Henrici which we've used three different times, and I think it is of the same high quality. We were in Prague during the Christmas holidays three or four years ago and found that to be a great time to visit (but cold for sure!)

Just a heads-up: you are going during the peak season, when prices are at their very highest in Prague. Prices will be greatly inflated, just because it's the holiday season. To find something in your price range, you may need to look further out, or just agree to spend more money. Just because someone stayed somewhere for $100 when they were there, doesn't mean it will be anywhere near that price during the top season. Look carefully at the prices on the websites, and you will see they change depending on the exact dates of your stay.

Although I have said it elsewhere on this forum, I disagree about the Pension
Dietzenhofer. I was with a friend ( we are 2 40 year old women) and although we felt safe inside it is in a deserted, dark neighborhood and we were scared going there every night. We tried to change to the three ostriches and looked inside. It was booked, but it is much, much better than the dietzenhofer. It is also located right under the bridge and not scary to go to at night.
Also the Dietzenhofer promised me 2 beds and gave me one bed and a chair that folded into a bed which fell through on me 2 different nights. The Dietzenhofer was clean and cheap, though.

I am now in Prague and staying at the Hilton Prague. From the messages I read about this hotel I was very scared. Let me tell you that it is fabulous. The lobby is marvelous, the price is kind of affordable (considering we are from Canada) and the rooms are average (but that's Europe). We have been upgraded because it is our anniversary and the freebee's are amazing. Champagne in our room, free breakfast and goodies in the Club room. The hotel is a little out of the way compared to the Charles bridge but nothing you can't walk or take a tram or metro. Very easy. My husband and I have been travelling around the metro for days (and we are in our 60's). We just saw the Four Seasons HOtel in the Charles bridge and please, for the money it costs, it's nothing compared to this hotel. I recommend this hotel and to the person who complained about the music in the halls, get a life!

Sorry to hear about tledford's unhappy stay at the Dientzenhofer.
