Prague - Hotel Florenc

I have been to Prague but stayed in the main town center district (1). That hotel is not in the center, being in Prague 8, so I personally would not stay there due to that. I liked being able to walk from my hotel to Old Town Sq and other things around my neighborhood (I stayed near Jewish Qtr just north of Old Town Sq). Prague 8 is not far away, but you will not walk from there to center, you'll have to take metro or bus. You'll have to decide if that matters to you or not; hopefully you've traveled before and have some idea what you prefer. I looked at that hotel on various web sites and it is cheap but nothing special so is not what I would call a "bargain" at that rate, just about right given it's quality and location; I have different taste standards than some, I know, I do not like bland modern furniture. It looks adequate at about US$60-75/double which seems to be the rate. If you cannot book elsewhere for that holiday period, I would go ahead; at least it is right near a metro stop, which is convenient.

Christina: thanks so much for your input. We agree with your preference for being close to the center. However, due to Easter holidays most places are booked (at least those reasonably priced!) The other choice we have is in the center but the price is about double. Given our 7 night stay, the savings will buy lots of food and wine! We have travelled extensively (but this is the first trip to Eastern Europe) - we leave the hotel early and return late is our norm. Our concern is with the neighborhood where the Florenc is located as well. Again, thanks for your knowledgeable input!

Cindy, I looked on my Prague maps last night to see where that hotel is. I think the neighborhood will be safe enough, but that hotel is on a very large busy street, it is a main thoroughfare. So, that will probably make it safe but maybe not much ambience. It is just across border from Prague 1, so you maybe could walk to center but I would not bother with the metro so close--also, with a couple major freeways near it and I think maybe rail tracks, walking might not be so good. All I know is I have heard the metro can be dangerous in Prague at night, so be careful (minor crime, mainly muggings for money I think). I had no problems but I stayed closer to center and did not take metro extremely late, probably not past 8-9 pm; I did take the bus one night after the opera and had no problems (about 10 pm), but I think trams or bus can be safer than the metro (no tunnels, everything and everybody more open and visible). I did not know a lot of Czech (I studied about 6 months before going, enough to buy tickets, read signs, simple things), so I was a little leery of taking cabs at night as I had heard cabs can rip you off in Prague and I would not be able to take to cab driver very much probably, I did not want to bother with such problems--so, to me, I preferred to take public transportation.
