Postojna or Skocjan
My husband and I will be traveling to Slovenia this October. We are renting a car and spending 5 or 6 days in Eastern Slovenia. Which cave is the better of the two, or are they different enough that we should try to see both of them?

I haven't been to the second cave you mentioned, but I was lucky enough to see the huge expanse of caves which make up Postojna. Just the little train ride into the core area of the caverns is fun. We visited Postojna out of Ljubljana which we found delightful. Sorry I can't help you regarding the second cave.

They are definitely different, but Postonja is far more dramatic...so large that a railed vehicles has to take you through it....while there, be sure to visit the Lipica Horse Farm where the Lipizaner white horses are trained for their Spanish Riding School in Vienna...they put on a daily show in their large arena at the farm..only about a half hour ride from Postonja, near Trieste.
In Slovenia, Lake Bled and the ski resorts around Kraniska Gora are lovely places to visit...try a rafting trip down the wild Sava River, gorgeous scenery all along the river. Enjoy!
I would also highly recommend a visit into Croatia as far as Plitvice Lake National Park..for an awesome view of the 16 cascadingb lakes and some delightful hiking trails...only about two scenic hours from Lubljana
Stu T. Enjoy!

Funny, somewhat sad story. After I first visited the Postonja caves back when it was all Yugoslavia and still within the Iron Curtain, so-called, I suggested a friend of mine, a lawyer, visit the fantastic caves while he was in trial in Trieste for a client. He drove with his wife to Postonja and was spooked because he thought a car was following him all the way...got to the entrance to the caves, saw the other car stop also, and he turned around and hightailed it back to the "safety of Trieste"...on my next visit, I had my wife take a picture of me standing next to a Yugoslavian police car ("milicia"and it's policeman, and sent it to him.(In those days, one had to ask permission to take such a photo)

We visited Postojna for the second time in March. Last year, we went during the week and it wasn't so crowded and it was a fantastic, almost magical, trip. This time we went on a Sunday, and it was such a different, less personal atmosphere. We coincidentally had the same English guide, "Stan", both times. I would advise not go on the weekend if at all possible. But we also went to the castle on Sunday, and that was wonderful and not crowded at all.
Later on we tried to visit Skocjan, but having traded in the car for a different rental contract, we were not allowed to drive to Slovenia from Italy. So check that out!
