Post-River Cruise Time On Our Hands

My wife and I and another couple will complete our river cruise in Moscow on this coming Oct. 7th. We will have been in Moscow for 3 full days and taken the standard tours of the city as provided by the cruise line. With the cruise officially over we can immediately depart for home if we wish or, should we choose, we can hang around for a few days (maybe up to a week or so) and do some creative stuff on our own. Can any of you Fodorites out there recommend something in or around Moscow that would be worth including at the end of our scheduled trip? I think we would be willing remain in Moscow for a unique experience or train somewhere for same as long as it isn't too long a journey. Our "hot buttons" would not be museums or ballet at this point in our trip. Other than that we're pretty open to suggestions. Would love to hear your ideas.

According to the literature here's a brief description of the tours we will be taking.

Day 1: We will be issued Metro passes allowing us to travel with our guide thru some of the more ornate stations to several famous Moscow landmarks. Among them will be Revolution Square, Red Square (St. Basil's, Kremlin exterior, Lenin's Tomb, GUM), Cathedral of Christ the Savior, Sofiyskaya Embankment (Bolotnaya Square) and, finally, the Tretyakov Gallery. At this final stop I believe we will attend a performance featuring traditional Russian music and dance.

Day 2: We take a guided evening tour of the city viewing many of the the same sites by night that we saw on day 1 during the day. This is followed by a river cruise with more views of Moscow by night.

Day 3: We take a guided tour of the Kremlin with an emphasis on the Kremlin Armory.

I'm anxious to hear of any suggestions you may have for us, napoxoguk.

Long-form response, with pictures

And if, like me, you don't really appreciate listicles, here's a blog post that covers some if not most of the places I mentioned, but in a form of visually-aided narrative:

THE Guide to Moscow for First Time Visitors - Kidding Herself

Enjoy!
