Thx for all of the help on Russia!
My wife and I just returned from a week's vacation to St. Petersburg & Moscow via Eastern Tours Consolidated.
It was a most rewarding trip for both of us.
I am in the process of preparing a travelog that will highlight our experiences. It will take about 2 weeks to pull together all of our information.
If anyone is interested in receiving it, pls communicate to my email. If I can help with something quick, let me know.
I want to thank all Fodorites who were kind enough to help in my preparation for our trip. I specifically would like to thank Marc David Miller for his help and for all the help he provides the forum on Russia.

Like anything else, recommendations on sightseeing depend on what you are interested in. A basic tour for three days would be
-City overview, for 1/2 day;
-Hermitage (3-4 hours)
-State Russian Museum (great icons)
-Peter & Paul Fortress, Cathedral
-Nevsky Prospect, including Kazan Cathedral, Church on Spilled Blood, some of the stores
-St. Isaacs Cathedral
-Museum of Political History
-Ethnography Museum
-Artilliary Museum, Naval Museum
Depending on what is playing opera or ballet at the Mariinsky and/or Mussorgsky; concert at Shchostokovitch Hall. Many music-related sights, such as the Museum of Musical Instruments, Rimsky-Kosakov House, Chiliapin House, etc.
For a short trip probably the best guide book is "Eyewitness/DK Guide to St.Petersburg"-not much depth (for that the Rough Guide is best) but a nice overview and enough information to get your interest up.

Bob: My husband and I took the River Cruise from Moscow to St. Petersburg this summer. We, too, really enjoyed this trip adn are grateful to all the Fodorites who provided Russian travel tips and advice. Please send me a copy of your trip log -- mine took two months to complete because of severe cultural overload!

Dear Bob,
Thanks for your message, like most of the people here, my husband and I are travelling to Moscow for 2.5 days (only!) Mid-December and would love to receive your travelogue (especially Moscow part). My e-mail is [email protected]
We are thinking of spending 1 whole day in the Kremlin, Red Square, St Basil, Lenin's tomb, including the Armoury Museum. At night we will pay a visit to the Gum. Then we will have 1.5 day for Old Arbat Street, Kitai Gorod, boyar Romanov's house, Novodevichy Convent including the cemetery.
We would also love to go the VDNKh, flea market in Ismailov, and Gorki Park to see people iceskating on the river but I'm afraid we would not have enough time!
Regarding an evening at the Bolshoi, what is the best way to get tickets?
Thanks!

The absolutely cheapest way to get a Russian visa (assuming that you have the necessary visa support) is directly from the consulates
www.RusCon.org
although there are often lines and occasional backlogs.
And thanks for the compliment, Bob. I'm happy to hear that your trip was a wonderful experience!
