Positano or Amalfi

Having never been to the Amalfi Coast before, I am unsure as to whether to stay at the Albergo California in Positano or Hotel dei Cavalieri in Amalfi. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

One vote for Positano and the California hotel.
As a curiousity, I believe they took some scenes of "Under the tuscan sun" from a balcony of that hotel or very near by.

Hi dec,

What do you hope to do on the AC?

We are spending 2 nights on the AC after a bike trip through Tuscany. Our hope is to walk around lots, eat great food & drink delicious wine. Other than that, we are pretty flexible & only require a nice room with a great view.

Another vote for Positano. If you go, try to have lunch on the terrace of the Hotel Poseidon. The hotel serves some of the best food we've ever had in Italy!

Also try IL RITROVO or DONNA ROSA or both! in Montepertuso, a mountain village that is a short car ride from Positano. If you go to IL RITROVO at sunset, you should be able to see all the way back down the mountain to Positano. It is spectacular, and the food was very very good. Some of the restaurants in Montepertuso arrange roundtrip transportation for their guests, so ask your front desk to call ahead and find out.

Have a wonderful time!

Just wanted to give my 2 cents based on a recent trip, during which we had a rented car and stayed at Amalfi.

Amalfi is at the sea level, and most of the hotels there having ocean view would be 20-100 feet above sea level. If you are looking to open your window to the sea (and nothing else), then a Positano hotel may offer better possibility.

However, Positano hotels are more expensive, and the "walking" that you are interested in may be more like climbing (up and down with lots of stairs). But this may be just what you are looking for.

We enjoyed staying in Positano and visiting Amalfi. Positano was prettier and had just stunning views. But it is a quick trip to Amalfi, with good shopping!

By the way, I second a trip up to Montepertuso for dinner at Il Ritrovo! Fabulous!

Hi dec,

We very much enjoyed our stay at the hotel Le Sirene in Praiano - 6km Eof Positano.

You can take the bus to the other towns.

See www.lesirene.com

Thanks Ira - I did try Le Sirene but they were booked. I have now booked the Hotel California in Positano. Thank you everyone.
