I am planning a return trip to the Amalfi Coast. Last time did not visit Positano because I had heard it was very steep. We are early 50's, fairly reasonable shape. We went to Capri last time and opted to walk up to the town from Marina Grande and I thought I would have a heart attack. We would not stay in Positano but would like to go to see it and have dinner there. Do you have to climb to get to everything?

Get off the SITA bus at the top of the town and walk down.

Take the Orange bus up to the SITA stop at the top.

My husband and I just returned from Positano and stayed at Hotel Villa Rosa which we loved (I know you said you wouldn't stay in town, but wanted to mention it anyway). It was a good location, close to bus stop and about 10 minute walk to beach. Lots of shops and restaurants nearby. I didn't feel like I had to 'climb' to get to everything, but Positano is certainly built into the cliff which makes for little 'flat' traveling. However, I think it depends what you want to do. If you want to hang out at the beach most of the time, there are lots of shops and restaurants right there with no need to do lots of walking. There is a bus that stops down the hill in the center of town so you can avoid some climbing by using that. If you take it slow, I think you'll be fine. In my opinion, it's a place not to be missed! If you're very concerned, just take a taxi or car directly to the restaurant you'd like to eat at. If you take the bus that goes into the center of town, you can easily get to several shops and restaurants quickly -the stop is very centrally located. Enjoy!

Depending on where you are coming from, even easier than the bus is a boat which will let you off at the main level. YOu can see most of what you want to see with practically no climbing at all.

I second Ira's SITA suggestion. It's a real step-saver, and only 1 euro!

I take it you stayed below 60 meters up the hill?

My husband and I spent 3 too short days in Positano. We're in our 60s and had no problem. A difficult trek was from the boat up the hill using the steps. We had no idea where to exit this enormous stairway and kept climbing, huffing and puffing. We found out that we had passed our hotel

Once we got to the hotel, we saw a road that was a pretty gentle walk up and down the hill. It was a long walk but not overly steep. This was very worth the effort and I kept saying it justified some extra pasta or biscotti and vin santo.

Yes, when we were just there as a day trip. I don't see any point in going up the hill for views if you are aren't staying there and if you're seeing other views from other places along the coast. Sure it would be great to stay in a hotel up there with a view. But if petsitter is just visiting for the day and concerned about a climb, I really don't see any advantage in doing one.

Others may disagree but I actually think Positano is more dramatic from the ground looking up than from the top looking down. (although admittedly both are pretty darned spectacular.
