Positano, Amalfi questions

My wife and I would like to spend about 4 nights on the Amalfi coast, this being our second trip to Italy but the first time South of Rome.

We would be travelling from Rome and have some questions on where to "base" ourselves. Where we are coming from is that while we enjoy the big cities and the "touristy attractions", we also realllly enjoy hanging out with the locals and their culture.

We would like some suggestions on where to stay for these four nights. We have considered the "Onda Verde" in Amalfi and also the "Villa Rosa" in Positano. My wife enjoys Italian music such as the festivals at Ravello. And I'm still hearing about not taking her to an opera the last time we were in Italy. We would probably do some day trips to Capri, Rovello, and Sorrento.

I should also mention that we would really like to avoid renting a car, prefering the Italian public transportation. When you're from Phoenix (which has no public transportations) you really enjoy letting others to the driving. Sounds like an ad for Greyhound .

Thanks for any tip, suggestions, or comments.

Mark

If you're staying in Positano, I don't think you can beat Villa Rosa for charm, spectacular view, friendliness, for the $$. For specific comments, run a search here.

Mark, you don't need a car and honestly you don't want to drive there. We stayed at Hotel Miramare in Positano for 4 nights and moved around by either bus or hydrofoil to / from Sorrento / Amalfi / Ravello / Capri. Most of the time, we took ground transportation and return by hydrofoil, so that we can enjoy the view from different angle. Most of the hotels in Positano are built on hillside, unless your hotel is accessible by bus, be prepare to climb 100s of steps to get to youe hotel. Hotel Miramare is 200+ steps from the beach / dock, not accessible by car, but we enjoyed the room / views / services tremendously. We will return....but definitely will travel LIGHT. Have a great trip!

We stayed at the Belvedere. On the Sita bus route, but not in a town - 3kms from Amalfi heading towards Positano. All of the towns are quite busy with the throngs & we liked escaping. We had a stunning view of Amalfi & the coast from our patio - ask for Rm 2. 182 euro.

I think Onda Verde may be in Praiano which is a perfect location between Amalfi and Positano. You can catch a boat from there. Also, do a search on this hotel as well - I have read mixed reviews.

Hi,

Try the Tramonto D'Oro in Praiano. It is nicer than the Onda Verde and only a little more expensive. the views are breath taking. You look towards Positano. The owners are delightful, the sita bus is right in front of the hotel and it has a fabulous roof top pool to cool off in after a day of site seeing. the pool has the same wonderful view. whatever you do you will have a wonderful time.
