After further research and a lot of your suggestions, I do see that driving is not a good idea, so train to Naples and then private car to the next place is best.
Another option that some have suggested is train to Salerno. Not sure which one is better.

Coming from Rome, I'd take the fast train to Naples, which is just over an hour, then arrange for a private transfer to the Amalfi Coast. Good idea to give up the car idea for the AC! It's crazy traffic in the summer months, and parking is very difficult to find.

One of the advantages of the train to Salerno is that you can catch a ferry there that will take you to Amalfi (and I think Positano). It might be somewhat cheaper overall and it might be a nice option if your family enjoys scenic boat rides or if you have any concern that someone in your family might become car sick dealing with twisty roads and stop-go traffic in the back seat of a car. However, the appeal of taking the ferry diminishes if the ferry schedule is inconvenient or if you have a lot of luggage. If you decide to use a private driver, they can deal with a queasy passenger by making some stops along the way.

By the way, it's a good idea to eat lightly before taking road or boat trips along the Amalfi and to carry with you some bread sticks, crackers and sparkling water. Some people who rarely if ever feel motion sickness while traveling have still gotten upset stomachs on the Amalfi Drive.

We did the fast train to Naples and then hired a driver to take us to Positano. The best thing was that the driver would stop and show us the beautiful views along the way. He also got reservations for us a a restaurant above Positano with some amazing views. We did take a ferry from Positano to Capri for a day and then took a ferry to Amalfi and the SITA bus back to Positano. The views from the ferries were stunning. Enjoy your trip.

Having traveled Naples-Positano via private driver and Salerno-Positano via ferry, I would choose Salerno in a heartbeat if coming from Rome. Not just because I get carsick, but because the ferry ride is very easy (just over an hour to get to Positano), there is no traffic (I have been stuck in a traffic jam in one of the long tunnels between Naples and the AC on several occasions) and the views are gorgeous.

casacruz- We stayed in Positano for 5 days. Loved the area and felt the ferries and buses got us to everywhere we wanted to see. I would do the same in a heartbeat and really
want to go back.
