Pompeii hotel?
Hi all
We'll be spending a couple of nights in Pompeii after 4 days in Rome before we go to Venice by train. Any thoughts on a good hotel here or in a close by town? We'd appreciate the advice.
thanks

I do not think it is a seedy town I found it to be a small place with local tourists and a friendly atmosphere...If you want lots of british tourists go to sorrento.. We stayed right across the entrance at the hotel forum..has a wonderful citrus garden and the best breskfast...freshly cooked warm filled croissants..the square is lovely at dusk and there is a tower with elevator for some terrific views..they have email in the lobby..it is so convenient and you get to see the back of the site before anyone else gets there..and an esy walk from the station

We are planning somewhat the same itinerary. Since I assume we'll spend the day in the ruins and be exhausted, I am just looking for a place to sleep before boarding the train. However, the idea of an overnight train to Venice is also appealing, so as not to lose a day.

I also would not describe the town of Pompeii as seedy, but I also wouldn't stay there especially if you're talking multiple nights. I'd stay either in Naples or Sorrento which are 30 minutes by train from Pompeii in opposite directions. [Yes, there are British tourists in Sorrento. Also Americans, all sorts of Europeans, even including (surprise!) Italians. You'll see a lot of the same people at Pompeii.]
For such a short stay, however, and since you're bringing your kids to see Pompeii, I'd stay in Naples and see also the archeological museum.

Another vote for Sorrento. I stayed there four nights as a base for visiting Pompeii, Ercolano, and the Archaeological Museum at Naples. Worked out great.
I stayed at the Hotel City (budget), which is walking distance from the Sorrento Circumvesuviana train station. That was 10 yrs ago, so I don't know if the hotel is still fine, but I liked it at the time.
