Bnice, the chapter on Basilicata and Calabria goes from page 293 to 333. The Blue Guide is an English tour book so the approach is a little different. I like them because they have walks written up--you know, go to the main square, turn left and you will come across...etc. My copy is from the library. Why don't you check to see if yours has one?

My Neopolitan friends took me to Herculanium arther than Pompeii. It is much more excavated and much less crowded with tourists.

Thanks for all the great advice.

Let's just say for argument's sake that I wanted to see both Pompeii & Herculaneum, as well as the Naples museum. Could I work that out with an overnight in Naples?

Also, are the sites and the musuem open on Mondays & Tuesdays?

MizzEve: Yes, the sites are only closed on holidays but the Arch. Museum is closed on Tuesday.
On my 2nd trip to Naples I took the early train, checked my luggage at the train station and went straight to Pompeii.
The next morning I took the metro from the train station (~9am) to the museum, metro back to the station and Circumvesuviana to Herculaneum.
Regards, Walter

SNARL AND GROWL

Been out of town for 3 weeks and come back to catch up and read that the Naples Arc Museum will be closed on Tuesdays. The popping you hear is my carefully laid out dreams and plans. I had already read that the last entry was at 1:30, so we had changed around for that. So now I need some expert help and suggestions here from you naples buffs...

We have 8 hours here - were planning to go to Pompeii and the museum and spend the rest of the time wandering around Naples. We have been on the Amalfi shore drive and up to Amalfi, Sorrento, etc .

So plan my day for me, what would YOU do now?

Go to Pompeii or Ercolano first thing. Come back to museo or if time is running short walk the Spaccanapoli, have the world's best pizza, it's worth the effort.

SORRY, HAVE NO SAGE ADVICE FOR MIZZEVE. I AM A NOVICE PLANNING OUR FIRST TRIP TO ITALY. WILL BE STAYING IN PRAIANO FOR TWO WEEKS AND WISH TO INCLUDE AN
EXCURSION TO POMPEII AND NAPLES. IS IT BUS TO SALERNO THEN TRAIN TO POMPEII AND NAPLES OR IS THERE MORE DIRECT ROUTE (BUS)? WE PLAN TO EXPLORE AMALFI, CAPRI, AND ROME. NO FURTHER NORTH. WHAT SHOULD WE NOT MISS?
