Pompeii enroute from Amalfi to Rome
We'll be visiting Italy in mid April and would like to stop in Pompeii after leaving Amalfi town on our way, via train, to Rome. Any suggestions? Is it most convenient to take SITA along coast, then train from salerno to Pompeii? Can I assume Pompeii is on the train route? Any other suggestions? Thanks a bunch.

The Trenitalia station for Pompeii town is on the mainline from Salerno, and train takes as little as like 20 minutes.
But that's a little bit away from the archaeological site. Most people use the Circumvesuviana train to get to Pompeii, which you can take from Sorrento instead.
I don't know how easy it is to get from the Trenitalia Pompeii station, and which method is easier in general.

Hi P,
If you look up Pompeii on www.mappy.com, you can plot the route from the Trenitalia train station to the Circumvesuviana station at the entrance to Pompei Scavi.
It's about 2 km.

Hi Pati - There's a direct Sita bus from Amalfi which stops at Pompeii en route to Naples.
This might be your best bet with luggage. There is a free luggage store at the entrance to Pompeii ...

Thanks so much. Would you suggest reaching Pompeii, then on to Rome, by going through Sorrento or Salerno? We're staying at a hotel in Amalfi and that looks like it's about half way between both. I've heard too many negative stories about Naples and the train which connects Naples and Sorrento so was leaning towards Salerno side.
Also, is Salerno worth a stop over?

Although it seems a bit like backtracking (and adds 30-60 travel minutes)by going to Salerno from Pompeii, it will keep you from changing trains in Naples. The Salerno/Rome train will still make a stop in Naples.
Pompeii station(town) is on the line from Salerno. Pompeii Scavi station is on the local commuter train route that runs between Sorrento and Naples. Pompeii Scavi is across the street from the entrance to the ruins.

If you exit Pompeii through Porta Marina (the main entrance at the west end of the ruins), then just take the Circumvesuviana to Naples, then transfer to the mainline train upstairs.
But if you're spending more time in Pompeii and will visit the amphitheater area in the east, then you can exit over there and it's closer to the Pompei main train station for Trenitalia trains towards Naples and Rome.

You could make it easy on yourself by hiring a car and driver to pick you and your luggage up in Amalfi. the car and driver and your luggage can than wait for you while you take a few hours to explore Pompeii. The driver can than drop you off at the Naples train station.
