Pompeii and Herculaneum
Traveling to Rome, Florence, and Venice.
Must see the above mentioned sites. Will be traveling by train upon arrival in Rome. (also must depart for home from Rome). Any suggestions on how to manage it all in two weeks. Should we stay in Naples or Pompeii to visit the sites? How can you get from one to the other? We have never been to Italy ...therefore unfamiliar with the train system. We arrive on April 29th in the afternoon (about 2:00pm) at Rome airport. How does one get to the train station? We are also concerned about May 1 holiday. If we start out at the archaeological sites..train to Naples area...will the sites be closed. We only want to spend a day at each site and then move on. We have not reserved hotels/trains, etc. We are open to traveling in any direction that makes sense. We need help from some travelers in the know. Thanks in advance for any help.

We visited both sites from Sorrento. All are on the same commuter train line from Naples. I think that both sites are closer to Naples than Sorrento, but not by very much, and Sorrento is a more lovely place to stay than Naples IMHO.

Thanks all for help on my questions regarding these sites and on the train concerns...sorry about the new thread..new to this site...I feel a little more secure in the travel via trains thru Italy. Also thanks for the heads up on the May 1 closing..had a suspicion about that. We might just start off upon landing in Rome with a train trip to Florence and go on to Venice and then to Naples/Sorrento area for those sites and end up in Rome, where we also depart for home.
