Pompeii and Capri, from Rome

Pompeii and Capri, from Rome
My husband (now that the tickets are booked and sleeping accomodations arranged...) has decided he'd like to "fit in" Pompeii and Capri on this trip. While this is against my general plan for 6 solid days in Rome, I'm willing to humor him 
Here is the plan I have arranged. Please note, I know this is not optimal (he is fine with just 1/2 a day in each place), but I'd love to make it work. I guess that is the first question--does this make it work, and if not, how can I make it work?
Depart Rome on early express train to Naples
Naples to Capri, spend day and night on Capri (I found a 3* for 80 euros)
Next morning, get to Pompeii ???
Day at Pompeii, train back to Naples, late train back to Rome (the train schedules seem pretty flexible, although I can't book for March yet)
Questions...there is a ferry that runs Naples to Capri, correct? Where do I find this information?
What is the best way to get Capri to Pompeii? All I can figure out is to take the ferry back to Naples, then the train to Pompeii.
I have searched the boards high and low, and can't find anyone else that has made this quick trip (probably for good reason).
This is for March, and would keep us out of Rome for two days and 1 night.
Any help you can offer would be much appreciated by this wife, trying to do good.

You can do this, and since the rest of your trip seems fairly calm, a hectic two days wouldn't kill you.
I'm glad you are planning to spend the night on Capri. It is so different at night than during the day.
There are ferries and hydrofoils that go from Naples to Capri. You can search for Caremar or CapriNav or just look up the port in Naples - you should be able to find listings since they go pretty frequently.
You can get from Capri to Pompeii by taking the hydrofoil to Sorrento, and then the Circumvesuviana (train) from Sorrento to Pompeii. I think that is easier (and faster)than going to Naples to go to Pompeii.

BE SURE you understand that some ferry's are fast Hyrafoils and some are slow old tubs <G> and they have different prices. keep that in mind when you planning your overall time frame. Buy your return ticket as soon as you get there so your sure you get on the boat you want for return.Its a short hop on the train from Naples to Pompeii train stops right outside entrance to site.
If you spend the night on Capri you could take the early Ferry to Sorrento and take that in and do Pompeii after lunch more bang for the buck.

Hi Erika,
Just remember that in March alicafi (hydrofoil) and ferry service to Capri can be iffy due to rough seas. I would make sure of exactly what your Capri hotel cancellation policy is and carefully check the weather report before trying this quick trip from Rome.
Even better, since it will be low season on Capri, just wait and make a hotel res once you are there and can see how the weather is. Honestly, I don't think Capri would be very fun in bad weather anyway!
