I don't know the area as well as some others but since you haven't had an answer, here goes.

Poitiers has an interesting old centre and of course Futuroscope theme park which is worth a visit.

If you go further east from Poitiers, you will arrive at a very picuresque but relatively quiet area. You will find Angles sur Anglin, one of the picturesque villages of France and further on Saint Benoit. There is also the Brenne Nature Reserve and the Creuse valley.

If you go towards the west you will find La Rochelle which is a most interesting historic city, and the Ile de Re with its beaches and salt marshes. A fascinating place.
To the north is the Loire valley with its chateaux while to the south are Cognac, Bordeaux.

I would recommend the area. It has the advantage of being off the beaten track but within reach of many of the tourist attractions.

Poitiers every time. Chatelleraut, despite its proximity to Futuroscope, is a dull industrial town. Poitiers has a handsome centre with many historical buidings including a cathedral and fine museums.

Charles you are also only 30 - 60 minutes on the A10 from the wonderful area of the Loire Valley with many things to see. Poitiers is a great place too.

Poitiers! so many Romanesque churges that are remarkable. We hope to return there and see more in September. It's an easy city for walking.
