Please provide suggestions and critique my 2 week plan in Spain
Hi, I will be traveling with my GF to Spain the first two weeks of September.
We have a couple of specific dates and locations that are musts: Madrid on Sep 11 for the last stage of La Vuelta (bike race), and a visit to the Civil War area in Cataluna.
So that being said, this is my plan:
- Arrive in Barcelona at noon. See what ever we can before taking the Tren-Hotel to Granada at 9 PM.
- Arrive in Granada at 8:00 AM next day.
- We have 6 nights in Andalucia, we want to do two days of Mountain Bike rides in Sierra Nevada, but the rest of the time is open, what would be the best approach to see Sevilla, Alhambra and Cordoba? any thing else that can be squeezed in? Morocco?
- Madrid and Toledo for 5 days.
- Cataluna (Civil War zone) 2 days.
- Flight back home from Madrid.
Any thoughts, suggestions?
Thanks

4 nights for Granada, Sevilla & Cordoba is going to be extremely tight. I'd budget 4 nights in Sevilla with a daytrip to Cordoba. Granada really deserves 2 days but you want to do 2 days of mountain bike rides. So I think you're going to have to sacrifice a day of the mountain bike rides for a day in Granada. You'd still only have a day in Granada but you'd at least get to see the Alhambra and Albaicin. You could potentially cut a day from Madrid & Toledo and have a day in Granada and 2 days of mountain biking (or 2 days in Granada and 1 mountain biking).
I assume you've visited Barcelona as you don't seem to want to spend much time there at all. I admittedly don't know much abou the civil war zone in Cataluna but is there a reason why you wouldn't visit these places first before going to Granada
This is alot to cover in a little under 2 weeks.

or
Why would you go back to Madrid from Catalunya instead of flying home from Barcelona?
Several hours in Barcelona ( after an overnight flight) will not do justice to a great( and big) city.

A couple of days mountain biking in Las Alpujarras can be spectacular. http://www.rusticblue.com/las_alpujarras.htm
I would have seen Alhambra on the first day in Granada, and then head into the mountains for the next two days. That would leave you with some 2,5 days and two nights in wonderful Sevilla. http://www.andalucia.com/cities/sevilla.htm

Thanks all for your replies, I got better ideas now.
The problems I have with the schedule is that I am taking a charter flight to Barcelona on Sep 2, I paid a great price but the dates are not flexible, and I want to be in Madrid for the end of the bicycle race Vuelta a Espana on Sep 11. If it were not for those two constrains I would spend more time in Andalucia and fewer days in Madrid.
But if I fly immediately from Barcelona to Sevilla on the 3rd and go by train to Madrid on the evening of the 10th, that leaves me 6 full days, and two half days in Andalucia. With that I will spend 2 days in Sevilla, 2 in Granada, 1 mountain biking day and 1 side trip to Cordoba.
After Madrid, we'll see the war zone (personal reasons) and back to Barcelona to take the flight back home.
We will leave a full visit to Barcelona for another trip.
Thanks.
