Well trains Basel-Interlaken-Lauterbrunnen-Wengen take about 3 hours total - Zurich would be a huge detour. Again check Jungfraubahn Pass and Half-Fare Card against a Swiss Travel Pass. I think Half-Fare Card may be best but have no done the maths. If doing Lucerne too then look at the Berner Oberland Pass, good in both Interlaken and Lucerne areas.

Hello all and thank you so much,

The numbers you are getting Melnq8 are about the same I am getting. Actually I found a ticket today Luzern-Munich for 35CHF (I think, unless I missed other charges), but for travel in March. It is very difficult to cost this without being able to see the actual prices I am working under the assumption that July might be more expensive.... Any way I do it with the prices I can see right now, with and without the half fare card I end up with a higher expense by train because it's two of us... Interesting you point out that the "other" things not listed might make a big difference... I was thinking about that this morning when I was taking my dog out.... we are not planning on going to the Jungfrau for sure, but would like to explore the option of going to Schilthorn.... and even if we stay at Lauterbrunnen with the car parked for free, we'll have to add the rides to the other places... will revisit this trying to add as many of the trips I think we'll need as possible.

Sue81, I actually found a hostel in Luzern, one in Lauterbrunnen, and one in Wengen that I think are good options for us, and we are definitely planning on taking advantage as much as possible of grocery places/markets everywhere we are going, it's transportation that is a killer because we are opting to move so much... we understand that.

PalenQ, thank you for the tip about the Berner Oberland pass, I had not heard about that one, but I think Luzern is not included by looking at the map they have of their coverage. Might be a good option if maybe I can convince myself to drop Luzern.

Do you know how far in advance tickets are available?

Thank you!

I would take the cheap flight that you found to Basel but then immediately train to Interlaken and spend all your nights there. Everyone hates Interlaken (but it does have a nice small old town, almost free of tourists because they are all on the main street going to Hooters). Anyway, that's not the reason to stay there. The reasons are: it's only about 2 hours from Basel by train, there are more inexpensive lodging options, from Interlaken you can easily do day trips into the mountains (we did Muerren/Wengen/Grindelwald/Kleine) or in the opposite direction on the lake to Thun, Speiz, Oberhofen or to Bern. An enjoyable time in the mountains is totally dependent on cloud cover which is common in Switzerland even in July. With this plan you have several nights in Interlaken and each morning you can decide if it's a good day (then go to the mountains) or if it's less good - then take a boat ride on the lake or go to Bern. There are webcams in the center of Itnerlaken showing what it's like that day up in the mountains.

I and one other thru the ages have said they liked Interlaken! Others may and don't say but many diss - yet off the main toursit schlocked drag it is really a neat city - but I also think staying in a Grindelwald -just 20 minutes from Interlaken is better to be eyeball to eyeball with soaring Alps of the Jungfrau Massif.
