Please help me narrow hotels in Nice, France

Hotel La Perouse, Le Grimaldi, Palais de la Mediterrean, Westminster or Negresco.

I can't comment on the other hotels, but can recommend the Grimaldi. I stayed there a while ago and liked it a lot. Very affordable for such a nice hotel. Room and bathroom were large and tastefully done. And I had a standard room. It also had French doors opening onto a tiny balcony. Helpful staff and a great bakery for breakfast down the street for a less expensive option than the hotel.

It was 3 or 4 years ago. Others on this board with more recent experience have also recommended it.

The Negresco seems to be an odd addition to your list. It is considered a grand old hotel far superior to the others on the list. Some may say it has some "faded" glory, but it is still one of the "great hotels of the world".

I'm leaving in a couple of days for my fourth visit to Le Grimaldi. It is a wonderful hotel.
From what I'm told La Perouse is nice if you get the more expesive rooms with a sea view. Otherwise it might not be worth it.
I've heard good things about Palais de la Mediteranean but have not been there.
I've been in the Negresco but haven't stayed there. Some friends stayed there for a couple of nights before meeting us at Le Grimaldi and were happier at Le Grimaldi.
The Grimaldi is small and pleasant with a wonderful, helpful staff but I would not classify it as a "luxury" hotel. But we love it and can't imagine staying anywhere else.

I've stayed at The Negresco, The Westminster, and Le Palais de la Mediterannee. Save your money on The Negresco. Not worth it except for the fabulous lobby, but you're not sleeping there! We used to stay at The Westminster every summer, and while some of the jr. suite rooms with seaview were quite nice, others were shoddy beyond belief. So we switched over two years ago to Le Palais de La Mediterrannee, which I'd highly recommend, although it's a bit expensive.

we had a double w/ 2 double beds, I think. It was hillside view w/ a balcony which was fine. It's a pretty view of the hills behind the hotel. You'll for sure pay a lot more for seaview. The rooms were great, bed super comfy, flat screen, awesome bathroom, robes and slippers. All around great hotel. I'd stay again in a second.

I think I've stayed in all the categories of rooms at the Grimaldi. The last 2 times we've had a superior room which is quite large and has a sofa and very big bathroom. The standard room we had was smaller but not tiny (at least not compared to many rooms I've had in NYC).
The hotel has 2 separate buildings connected by a courtyard. We've always stayed on the rue Maccarone side but when there was a group of us there some had rooms on the rue Grimaldi side and were happy.

We had a seaview room at Le Palais on the 6th ( I think) floor. Just a note of caution- because the hotel was strangely renovated, it has huge pillars that block out some of the seaview, esp. on the lower floors. You'll see what I mean if you decide to book there. The rooms are very comfortable and spiffy though, as is the rest of the hotel. And the location is ideal- a few minutes away from Old Nice and just across from the Med.

If you're looking for a small hotel with the feel of Provence, head to the La Pérouse--but you must book a deluxe room with sea view, as the superior rooms are in need of updating and are small. The hotel site on 5 different levels of the rock housing the château on top. Thus, there's no street noise, and views from most rooms are fair to glorious. There's a roof-top sun terrace, a small fitness room with incredible views of the Mediterranean, and a swimming pool surrounded by lemon trees.

Note: the La Pérouse is not for anyone who has difficulty climbing stairs, even though there are elevators.

The seaview room at le Palais de la Mediterrean is tres expensive? Are all rooms basically the same with the location being the difference?

Not sure if all rooms are the same at Le Palais, since we only saw the sea view rooms. Sorry!

Just to backtrack for a minute, we were always quite happy in the sea view jr. suites at The Westminster. The room, a corner suite on the 5th floor, was HUGE, and had a tiny terrace with a totally unobstructed view of the water. I used to sit out there each morning with my coffee and it was really heaven. We stopped going there because the hotel was undergoing renovations, and there was lots of noise and staff changes. That was four years ago, though, so I assume and hope all that's over with now. If it's within budget, the hotel is very well-located, only a few blocks away from Le Palais, and probably still somewhat to significantly cheaper.

I stayed at La Perouse in September, 2005 and splurged on the deluxe room with the seaview. It was lovely. Ended every night with a glass of wine (or two), sipped while watching the sea from my balcony. The staff was friendly and accommodating. The location is great too, right next to Vieux Nice. I loved the way the hotel is built into the rocks, but as Underhill said, the downside is lots of stairs.

About those stairs...there are about 6 leading up from the street to the hotel lobby, then several on the way to the first elevator. Some rooms are at the end of corridors with a few steps up. The big flight of stairs is the one going from a hallway down to the pool and restaurant.
