Please critique my Ireland itinerary - August with pre-teens
Hi! Planning to spend a few weeks in Ireland / N. Ireland and maybe Scotland in August. Could you critique my tentative Ireland portion?
I am trying to do better at not rushing about and "checking things off the list" like we usually do. My sons are 11 and 13 and good travelers. My sis will join for part of the trip. We just lived in India for 4 years so we are used to hectic traffic and driving on the left despite being from the USA.
We like to do "bucket list" stuff like jumping off cliffs and aren't big history buffs. I'm there for the scenery and a lot of biking.
Fly into Dublin - 2-3 days. My sis wants to do the Guinness and Jameson distilleries. We can do a food tour and I hear there's white-water rafting nearby.
Rent car and drive to Killarney area, stopping at Cahir Castle on the way. Leave a full day for the trip and check into Killarney in the evening. Spend 4-5 days in the area, taking day trips to Dingle, Ross Castle, the national park, Lough Hyne (night kayaking), and enjoy driving the Ring of Beara and Kerry.
Drive North, see cliffs of Moher, spend the night in Limerick - they have a traditional Irish night of food and music that I thought would be fun.
Drive North to the Mayo area. Rent bikes for 3-4 days. Do a "buffet bike ride" and also the Great Western Greenway ride. Clare island has a place with great outdoor activities like raft building and cliff jumping and such.
At that point my sis will head back to Dublin and back to Germany where she lives. Boys and I will head to N. Ireland for some more adventure. I would welcome suggestions on what to do there - I'm just starting my work on that area now. Thank you in advance!!
