Planning trip to Spain

My best-friend and I are in our late 20's and we are planning a trip to Spain in October 2002. We want to get a feel of the country as well as having a great time and meet some interesting people. We are planning on being there for 10 days. Any suggestions as to where to visit/hotels to stay at would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

I would check out some if not all of the following lovely cities: Madrid, Toledo, Barcelona, Valencia, Mallorca, Marbella, & Seville. Have a wonderful vacation in beautiful Spain.

I thought cordoba and Seville where my highlights of Spain. Cordoba was just a day trip but worthwhile.

Although you don't specifically say that you are originating in North America, you might want to check out thre BA sale fares offered on Travelocity. Expire Aug 15.

Best wishes,

Rex
Definitely go to Cordoba. It is a magical city. The Mosque there is amazing!

A good route might be to start in Madrid including a day trip to Toledo. Then take the AVE (high speed train) to Cordoba and then to Sevilla. If you have time you can then go to Granada and see the Alhambra. Have fun!

My husband and I were in Spain in 1998. (in our late 20's at the time). We spent two weeks in Madrid, Barcelona, Malaga & Nerja, Jaen, Grenada, Toledo and Avila. We flew in/out of Madrid, took a train to Barcelona, then train to Malaga, then rented a car and drove to Nerja, then back up to Madrid, via the other cities I listed.

We liked Barcelona the most. It was a fun city, lots to see and do. On the sea, yet hills on the outer edge of the city, with beautiful views. You must see Gaudi's work, including Parc Guell. In Barcelona we stayed at Maison Castilla, not expensive and not far from Las Ramblas. It had a very nice breakfast buffet. (in fact, we compare all our hotel's breakfasts again this place).

We thought Madrid was nice too. We stayed at Hostel la Macarena, right off the main square. It is very inexpensive, very basic, but clean place to sleep, with friendly service, but not much more. If you stay there, ABSOLUTELY request a room away from the street. There is a bar across the street, and a LARGE recycling dumpster, that collects glass bottles ALL NIGHT LONG.

My hubby flat out disliked Toledo - I thought it was nice for a 1 day visit (it is a bit depressing, with many dark streets).

We also enjoyed Nerja, a smal town in the very south, east of Malaga. The hotel where we stayed (Cala Bela) had nice views of the sea, and cost about $20-$30 a night! Very relaxing atmosphere there. Many British people retire in this city, so many of the locals speak English, if your Spanish is weak.

Grenada's only redeaming quality, in my mind, was the Alhambra. Unfortunately, the Alhambra is beautiful, and a must see - too bad it has to be located in such a retched town.

If you like night life, you will love Spain! The food is great, and the Sangria is better. Have fun!

Although I'm many years older than you, I think if you appreciate dance at all, you might try seeing flamenco in Seville at Los Gallos. Also, if you are in Nerja, the caves are fantastic. And the Alhambra in Granada is very worth while. And, yes, Barcelona is a great city--I'd recommend a restaurant that had a youngish (mostly late 20s early 30s) clientale--La Dolca Hermicia at Madalanes 27--2 blocks towards Ramblas from Palais de la Musica (see the inside if you can swing it). La Dolca has excellent food and is very reasonably priced.
Have a great time--Spain is wonderful.
