Thanks for the Youtube link. Frank Skinner is hilarious, but I found his accent very easy to understand. I am guessing there are brummies with thicker accents out there.>>

possibly; but they tend to be toned down for public consumption. I had a boyfriend once from somewhere in the Black Country called Quarry Bank where they speak what might be called Brummy squared - you could have cut his accent with a knife!

As for which time of year brings the most settled weather there are no promises of course but over the last few years September has often been very pleasant. [I tend to notice as my birthday falls then] And if you fancy a dip, the sea is more or less at its warmest, and if you're lucky, the air temperature won't freeze you when you get out of the water.

About British weather -I always think of something I heard a cop in Sidcup police station say to someone on the phone - a guy from Australia -who was calling to report things that were stolen from him:

he rattled off several things and then said "Sunglasses" to which the cop replied "sunglasses -what'd you bring them for"!!!

Ha ha - nice story Pal. As a man who has lived in Perth all his life, I can tell you there would only be 30 or so days out of the year where you don't need your sunglasses when driving! Obviously there are few more sunglasses-free days in the Old Dart.

There appeared to be no clear winner when comparing May-Jun to Sep-Oct, but for me the winning entry was JJ << and the days are longer in May - at least three more hours of daylight, four more hours if your trip crosses into June >>

We have been able to see so much more having travelled over May and June for our continental trips so rain or no rain we don't want to miss out on daylight. Coming from Oz we have lengthy summer days but never as late as what you see in Europe.

Its a long post so just a few thoughts!
I would try and base myself in London for a lot of the England part of the trip. Allow (adleast) 1 week to explore London, if not more time, because there is just so much to do and see there. Even stay in 1 or two locations within the city to get a real feel for the place. And from here you can do very easy day trips to Oxford & Cambridge via rail. Brighton is another good day trip from London via rail.
