I like Rome - but I LOVE Paris. People your parent's age (I'm within 3 years) always seem comfortable returning to places that they've been to before and liked - instead of trying to discover new places. This is VERY typical for people visiting Europe for the second time.
Rome, Tuscany countryside (similar to Provence) and then Venice would make an excellent and easy-to-navigete itinerary.
