Plan D - Snowdonia - need self catering recs

Our travel plans have been evolving...

We have finally decided that we will spend about a week in Snowdonia. Anyone have any suggestions for self-catering? I was thinking around Betws-y-coed, but we are not set on the area. We plan to do some golfing, hiking and day trips to Liverpool and Angelsey.

There are only 2 of us and I was hoping to keep below 350 pounds per week, hopefully less and preferably non-smoking.

Thanks in advance.

I can't give you a specific recommendation for Snowdonia but we found a fantastic self-catering cottage that comfortably could sleep six in your price range in mid-Wales.

For us, it was a great location as we had already spent 3 nights on the north coast of Wales and wanted to explore the borders and the mid-coast. We used Hoseasons.co.uk for the rental.

Lucky you. It's beautiful there. I spent a weekend there one
year with friends from Liverpool.

This one is bit over your budget, but is super nice w/ a roomy kitchen and views

This one is fine - but smaller/cheaper.

If you'd consider a hostel, we stayed two nights at the YHA Snowdon Ranger in May 2007. They have a self-catering kitchen, or you can buy meals there. It's across the street from a lake, quiet, and pretty nice. www.yha.org.uk

Thanks everyone.

Janisj- Both of those look really nice and I've got enquiries to both.

Cigalechanta - I didn't realize Trip Advisor had self-caterings. Unfortunately, almost all of the smaller ones are already booked, except for one where smoking is allowed. Hope I haven't waited too long..

Cathinjoe - I am checking with Hoseasons too. Interesting name.

We've never self-catered in Europe before. Some cottages mention 'electricity top off cards'. Does that mean there is an extra charge for using electricity?

We are sooo looking forward to our week in Snowdonia. I'll be sure to post a trip report when we get back.

I haven't stayed in a place with electricity top up cards (I think you mean "up" not off) but they may have replaced the old "coin in the meter" which I have experienced--you pay for your electricity use by putting one pound coins in the meter. This may be the newer way to pay as you go. Am sure owners will provide a complete explanation.

Meant to add on my first post that Hoseasons has places in Snowdonia. We have used them a couple of times in Wales and Yorkshire and been very happy. Don't know whether they carefully rate and monitor their owners or whether we just got lucky. Prefer to think the former.

Janisj,

Just want to know that we rented Cyrau View for the week. It looks really nice. Thanks for your help.

Cathinjoetown,

Didn't have any luck with Hoseasons. Guess we waited a little too long. Everything in our price range was booked. Its a good website, so will keep it in my favorites. Thanks to you too and everyone who responded.

I am checking with Hoseasons too. Interesting name.>>

from memory they used to/still do run boating holidays [as in canal boats]. they have now branched out into self-catering. i realise that this doesn't help you with the reason for the name.

looks like a lovely cottage that you have booked.

Whilst I appreciate that you have already booked, this may be useful for anyone with an interest in this part of the world.
