"I think you watch too many movies. The risk to tourists in most of the US is low. The crime rate in the US is not so high that one sees crime everywhere they go - I have never witnessed a mugging, murder, or any other violent crime, and I lived in the US for nearly 30 years. And a shockingly high % of murders are committed by people known to the victim. So, if you want to avoid being murdered, don't hang out with murderers"

Ditto, contrary to what many naive europeans believe, much of the US has a low crime rate. I can't blame europeans though, their news media often gives them a false picture of the US. Most of the violent crime in the US is concentrated in certain bad inner city urban neighborhoods where they have a high rate of crime and shootings. A large portion of the shootings in the US are done by people involved in gangs or criminal activity in these inner city neighborhoods. Don't go into these areas(tourist and citizens alike have no reason to) and don't get involved in gang/drug activities and you're chances of being a crime victim are low.

'Cause there are no drugs in the suburbs and small towns. That whole meth epidemic is a 'city' problem.

I can't think of anyplace I've ever been that I didn't really feel safe in. I guess there have been a few situations over the years that have made me uneasy - but they were situations that could have occurred anywhere....not restricted to any one place.

Seville. When we got off of the hotel elevator on our floor there were armed guards stnding there with rifles. I didn't feel comfortable in Seville after that.

FYI to travelgourmet:

I don't think that "one sees crime everywhere they go (while in the US)" but my point is one is not exactly safe here either. From FBI data (2006) there were almost 4,000 violent crimes and 47 murders committed everyday. That's 1 murder every 30 minutes.

I find those numbers staggering and to think you can avoid being a victim by not hanging around with murderers is just plain stupid.

Guenmai, I apologize for going off subject on your thread. --Parrothead.

I know this is not Europe - but as an Australian I find there are areas of Sydney that are very threatening these days.

Parrothead,

or you could look at the statistic from a different angle:

47 murders per day = 17,155 murders per year

in a nation that has a population of about 300,000,000.

Sorry, your point disappears very quickly. As noted before, most murders are gang/drug related or family members/friends/lovers, etc..

Perhaps out of the 17k murders, 2500 are just random and inflicted on innocent people. Perhaps out of that, about 10 are foreign tourists. Perhaps!!! Yet US had almost 57,000,000 foreign tourists in 2007. Let's assume that 10 did get murdered. 10 out of 57,000,000...

You have a MUCH better chance of hitting the super lotto than getting murdered.

Are you a super lotto millioner?

This one is not for the "weak kneed". Once you've watched it, it will be apparent that I HAVE NOT DONE THIS! But it certainly falls into the "not safe" category.

El Caminito del Rey (The King's pathway) is a walkway, now fallen into disrepair, pinned along the steep walls of a narrow gorge in El Chorro, near Álora in Málaga , Spain. The walkway has gone many years without maintenance, and is in a highly deteriorated and dangerous state. It is only one meter in width, and over a 700-meter fall, and over time it has also lost its handrail. Some parts of the walkway have completely collapsed and have been replaced by a beam and a metal wire on the wall. Many people have lost their lives on the walkway in recent years. After four people died in two accidents in 1999 and 2000, the local government closed the entrances. However, adventurous tourists still find their way into the walkway.

When you get to the video YOU MUST GO FULL SCREEN (click the little square next to the "volume&quot.

Hang on......!!!!!!!!

With those brillant odds, I'd become a lotto millionaire in no time. The chance of winning the lottery are remote compared to that.

Wrong, just stay out of certain bad inner city neighborhoods. Most shootings are committed by gangsters and those involved in drug/gangs/criminal activitiy. Stay out of these neighborhoods and don't walk around alone in dark deserted areas of downtown(same in any big city anywhere in the world) and you chances of being a crime victim are low in the US. Of course americans know what I'm talking about but if I say more, I'll get censored here.

So you'd say don't go into the Ghetto and don't give a darn about the people that have to live there (and get shot) just because they're poor.

A not so good attitude of some americans.

Look Logos999, you're another stupid european making naive judgements about thinks you know NOTHING about. The only "ghettos" are the ones created by too many of the people who live who live a certain lifestyle there and no, I'm not going into a neighborhood where there is a lot of gangs and criminal activity. Nobody gets shot because they are poor, and the poor get pleny of government aid, more than I'll ever get. If you want to to there, be my guest, maybe you will wake up. Also, no I don't care for people who engage in criminal activity. You are so naive, please shut up.

>a certain lifestyle
So that would be the people murdering lifestyle, right. To bad for you, when you're born into such a neighborhood ,can't afford to get out and don't have police to protect you because they're scared going there too.

Anybody who wants to move from these neighborhoods can and people do all the time. If the neighborhood is bad, it is because the criminals and too many of the people make it bad through their behavior. It is not the rest of society's fault. The police are in these neighborhoods. This is what is so annoying about europeans like you. You are so sheltered and naive and you have no knowledge of the situation here because you don't have it in your country and until you do, you are in NO position whatsoever to judge those in other countries, ok , get it.

Yes, that's exactly the society's fault. They're wealthy enough to do better, it is a states duty to help those in need and protect the citizens from harm. Maybe the next administration will do better. Gun control!!, better welfare, and no tax breaks for people that don't need them.
