Places to go and things to do in Zurich

We are travelling by train from Paris to Zurich on 26 April 2011. We arrive in Zurich around 18:00 on 26 Apr and depart for Venice via Milan at 11;00 next day.

We would welcome some tips to enable us to take advantage of our short time in Zurich. We are in our 50's and both like live music, inexpensive dining and great sights.

There is no such thing as inexpensive dining in Zurich. Seriously.

As for sites, I'd wander the Old Town, along the water, and maybe a bit along Banhofstrasse. No real big sites, but some pleasant areas.

its a bit late to go see a lot of things in and around zurich...

i would suggest, after checking into your hotel, i would take a stroll down the bahnhofstrasse towards Paradeplatz... there i would go have dinner at the Zeughauskeller, traditional and very good(!) food for, in züri-terms, cheap for what you get...

then id continue to take the walk down bahnhofstrasse until you hit the lake.. there take a left and walk all the way to Bellevue...
there you can either take a right and walk the shores of the lake.. its a nice stroll away from the center.. you can take the tram back...
or you take a left and walk up next to the Limmat... you will then be parallel to the old town of Züri, wich hosts many small caffees, bars and shops..
however, since its a tuesday and you arrive "quite" late, i wont be counting on shopping.. id rather try to enjoy the city and its nightly vibes...
live music is realy gonna be hard to find that evening...
