At Gonergrat Switzerland 12,000 feet up surrounded by towering mountain peaks and watching the clouds slowly swirl away from the middle of the Matterhorn to see the most incredible sight. The person next to me actually was so moved by the view that she cried!
The other astonishing view was from the Eagle's Nest--Berchtesgaden--atop the mountain after the drive up on hairpin turns to get to the top by a special bus (no cars allowed on this drive).

Gråbrødre Torv (Greyfriars Square) in Copenhagen on a late summer evening. Quiet and quintessential Europe.

Eileen Doonan Castle in Scotland, late afternoon spring day. The castle iself is a little bit of a letdown inside, but the setting - from a mile or so away - is spectacular.

Fredricksborg Castle in Hillerød, Denmark. Very impressive, didn't expect it at all.

Canyons on Gran Canaria, like a smaller version of the Grand Canyon.

I know this is a touristy (and american) place but. . . . I did not expect to be but was VERY moved by Pearl Harbor. It is just so gorgeous and quiet. You take a boat ride out to to the memorial and see one of the ships -still leaking oil. I am glad I went even if it wasn't happy-happy.

A remarkably memorable but somber site is the village of Oradour Sur Glane - a French village where the civilian population was wiped out in a Nazi rampage shortly after D-day. The aftermath (rubble of burned homes, shops, cars) has been preserved unaltered.

This isn't European, but one of the most unxpectedly beautiful sights in my travels was the California coastline from Big Sur to Carmel. Such awesome natural beauty. You come around each turn in the Pacific Coast Highway and think, "This is THE most beautiful thing I've ever seen." only to drive on a few more feet, round another bend, and see a vista 10 times more beautiful! It's a stunner!
