places for kids to see and do in uk
I am taking my four daughters (12, 11, 9 and 5) to Scotland, Wales, England and possibly Ireland in August for 3 1/2 weeks. We are traveling mainly by car, allowing us to stop when and where we want. As much as I would love to travel from castle to castle I'm not thinking my girls will want to. I'm looking for great places that are FREE or fairly cheap that my girls would find fun and interesting. They are keen to see castles and the scenery but I would also like it to be not all history but some fun activities too. They like shopping, animals, swimming and playgrounds, rides, etc. Thank you

Most beaches are free although parking usually isn't. There are wildlife and animal parks all over Britain, few I would think would be free. Parks are generally free as are kiddie playgrounds which would probably appeal to your youngest.
You need a quide book that has a lot of good information on what's available for children and you will also hear from people here who have done your trip with children. There are loads of things which come to mind but most are costly x4 children and one adult. Start looking for two for one specials and combined offers.
There are amusement parks in the UK, Thorpe Park, Legoland and Alton Towers are three of the biggest but I would focus more on places like Warwick Castle which has lots to offer children, particularly in the summer.
I don't think there's a master schedule so not sure how you find dates but village and small town fetes usually have games and rides for kids.

I recently googled this question for a friend. Her kids were a bit older, but give it a look.

While I haven't explored this website in full, there seems to be many things that could work for you and your daughters.
