Place des Vosges is considered by many to be the most beautiful square in Paris. It is, in itself, something to see. It happens to also house the former home and now museum of Victor Hugo, the author who wrote Les Miserables among others. There are restaurants and shops around the square. It's a popular place for "hanging out". The Carnavalet museum is also in the area as is the Picasso museum. All you have to do is do a text search here for either name and find previous threads to read. For that matter, a general web search will provide lots of info and photos too.

Place de la Bastille is a huge traffic roundabout, but nearby is the Bassin de l'Arsénal and the Canal St Martin (worth a stroll), and a bit further east the Viaduc des Arts and the Promenade Plantée along the top of it.
