Place to stay in Rothenburg ob der Tauber
Hi,
I would welcome your recommendation of a place to stay in Rothenburg ob der Tauber this summer. I would like a place inside the walls. I am looking for moderate accomodations. I don't need a luxury place, but don't want a place with shared bathrooms, etc. I will be staying for 2 nights in July. Thanks for your help.

We stayed at Hotel Burg. It is located right on the inside of the wall with beautiful views of the valley. It was just a very short walk to the main town square.
I think we paid 155E, but it was for a large room at the top of the hotel. The breakfast room also faces the valley and there is a lovely garden. I highly recommend the hotel.

Try the Roter Hahn, just across from the Criminal Museum and a few steps from the Town Square. Nice owners, clean rooms, good rates.

Loved Rothenburg!!!! We stayed at http://www.gotisches-haus.de/ in room #30, the unusual corner room with balcony. It was wonderful...great location a few steps from the square. Have a wonderful trip.

Try the www.gasthof-greifen.rothenburg.de. Sizeable rooms, very inexpensive, family run w/a great breakfast, right off of the main square.

I loved Rothenburg! We stayed at the following hotel (notes from my web site http://www.luvtotravel.homestead.com/home.html - you can go to my restaurant section to see where we dined):
HOTEL GERBERHAUS
Owners Inge & Kurt
Spitalgasse 25
Rothenburg
Email: [email protected]
135DM double w/bath, with buffet breakfast. Cancel 1-week prior. Credit cards accepted. This hotel is listed in the Rough Guide and Rick Steves books. Several people on Fodors.com also recommended it. This hotel is inside the city walls. Picture Rothenburg as a head (portrait). The hotel is located along the neck of the town. The hotel is along the bottom side on the right. Parking is available behind the hotel next to the town wall (we could see the car from our window). No charge for parking. The hotel is quite charming. The building had floors, which were multi split-level. We were on the 3rd level and our room, #7, faced the hotels beer garden and town wall. The room was very nice with birch furniture, same type bed as Café Post, a small table with 2 chairs, t.v. (CNN!), and a bathroom with tub (again no shower curtain). The place is nicely decorated and very clean. The ceiling had wood beams. The hotel is about a 5-minute walk to the town center. The breakfast served, buffet style, was very good: assorted meats, cheese, jams, breads, fresh fruit, strawberry yogurt, cereal, coffee, tea, orange juice, bottled water and small bottles of Sekt, which is sparkling champagne. In the afternoon, one can have dessert and drinks. I was very pleased in choosing this hotel.

I've heard great things about the Gasthof Greifen, but another nearby inexpensive place is the Gasthof Butz. Ample public parking in front and only a few steps from Market Square. Great place if you're on a budget.

Two more great spots for Rothenburg:
REICHS KUCENMEISTER: Located next to St Jacobs church. Ask for a room in the old building. It is also near the tourist info building and steps from the Main square. Restaurant is good even if you do not stay there. Outside patio for lunch in the summer.
MARKUSTURM HOTEL; This hotel is built into the walls of the city near a clock tower. It is pictured on cover of tour books and etchings. Nice people and very nice rooms. Reasonable rates when we were there last in 2001.
Hit my name above and it will bring up more comments about Rothenburg that I have made through the years. Been going there since 1970.

We stayed at the Hotel Kloster-Stuble in May and loved it. The price was great, especially given its location a couple of minutes from the main square. The breakfast was wonderful, the service really good, and the room nice and cozy. I would stay there again.

We stayed at Hotel zur Sonne, located on a quiet street just inside the walls.
www.sonne.rothenburg.de
Room #10 is a huge double with the biggest bathroom I've ever seen in Europe - (73 Euro including breakfast in 2003)

Another vote for Gerberhaus. Have stayed there twice (last time with my mom, who really liked it).

We've stayed with Karin and Hans ( http://www.haus-karin.de/)twice now...an older German couple who open up their home to tourists. Karen is a hoot and makes a mean FULL BREAKFAST. They live just outside of the wall with a 5 minute walking distance in. They must have at least four bedrooms and when we've stayed the price was only 22 Euro/person. This was a really neat experience!! Karin speaks great English!
