One Night in Rothenburg on Taber

We arrive early afternoon on a Sunday in September by rail and leave via rail enroute to Brugge the following day at 10am. We would like to find top class accomodation with a large bed in a great location taking account of our mode of transport , on foot, no car etc. We will walk, try to find the most interesting place in town for dinner and attend the Nightwatchman's Performance ! I am not sure if the Eisenhut, at in excess of 200 Euros represents the best value and the best experience for a single night stay. Can you help me with some good advice? If we can walk to and from the train or a short cab ride all the better. Thanks again.

My wife and I were there for one night and stayed at the Bayerischerhof (check website with all info at <www.bayerischerhof.com/index_eng.html> It is a short walk (we are senior citizens) to town gate. We were made to feel very welcome when we arrived. All arrangements were made via email.

Curt - I'm not sure if I understand your point! We like luxury and are usually happy to pay for it, but for the length of our stay and the amount of time we will spend in our room both the quality/size of the bed and the location are most important. Next time we will probably hire a car and stay in Comberg. Thanks again.

Two places will fit your bill: HOTEL REICHS KUCHENMEISTER or MARKUSTURM HOTEL.

Both have nice rooms and the location is great. Near the town square.

The Markusturm is on many of the pictures you see of Rothenburg and very scenic. Room #120 or 121 will get you the nice bed and a window overlooking the from and clock tower.

The Reichs is more rustic, but great ambiance. Try the restaurant even if you do not stay there.

The Nightwatchman is a walking tour and not a show. Bring comfortable shoes and enjoy!

My sister and I stayed at the Eisenhut for two nights last October. My sister had visited Rothenburg before and longed to splurge with a stay at this hotel. We were quite disapppointed, especially with our room, the decor best described as "tired theater lobby." The staff did not make up for the deficit, seeming to us quite aloof.

Mary_Fran. Thanks for your opinion and I have heard that opinion before. There have been some very good and very bad reports. When I looked through an old Relais and Chateaux Guide from 1996 I noticed Eisenhut was there. It certainly must have declined over the years. Staff grumpiness and aloofness has also been mentioned by others. I always have a good laugh about that because possibly the best hotel I have ever stayed at in this world had the staff that were the most friendly and helpful that I have ever experienced. That hotel is the Villa d' Este in Cernobbio Lake Como !
