Pisa and Lucca Side Trip

Pisa and Lucca Side Trip
My DH and I are staying in Florence in March and we would like to do side trips to both Lucca and Pisa.
Is it possible to combine the two in one day? Mainly in Pisa we want to see the Leaning Tower, baptistry, etc. I don't think that should take too much time, and wandering through the city shouldn't take too long either.
I didn't know how much time we should plan for Lucca. If it is possible to do both cities in one day, which would be better in the morning? I am leaning towards Lucca in the morning and then Pisa in the afternoon.
We have an extra day in Florence built in, just in case we end up spending too much time in one city and don't get to see one we wanted to.

You can catch the bus from Florence to Lucca across the street from the train station. The bus will drop you off at the wall to the old city. After visiting Lucca it's a short walk to the train station. Buy a ticket for Pisa and get off at the S. Rossore stop which is a short (couple of minutes) walk to the tower. After touring around the tower catch the bus to Pisa Centrale and a train back to Florence. Visit Lucca first because in the afternoon most things will be closed for several hours.

We stayed near Lucca last year, and of course visited Pisa. I didn't realise you could go up the Leaning Tower (last time I went, a few years ago, you couldn't). It was pretty busy around the Tower so we went and bought timed tickets to go up in the early evening. We then toured the other beautiful buildings and then went and had an early dinner. By the time we returned to the Tower (think it was about 7.30) the crowds had absolutely melted away, it was a beautiful evening, and up the Tower we went. And this really was one of the highlights of what was a fantastic 2 weeks in Italy!

kybourbon, so you seem to validate my decision to visit Lucca first, then Pisa.
Morgana, my DH wants to go up in the Tower, but I'm not sure if we will do it or not. I assume, going in March, if we decided to get tickets in the afternoon we wouldn't have a problem getting them.

I wouldn't assume I could get tickets especially during holiday times (Easter/spring breaks). If you want to reserve:

We found Lucca to be on riposa from about 1:30-2:00 until 4:30-5:00, but that was several years ago and things could have changed.
Use www.mappy.com to get the location of the two train stations (S. Rossore and P. Centrale) in relation to the tower. Once you load the map of Pisa you can mouse over the train symbols for the name of the stations. Train travel time from Lucca to S. Rossore is about 20 minutes.
FWIW - We found the prices to be cheaper at Il Papiro in Pisa than in Florence if you are interested in some of their paper items or cards. It's across the street from the tower.
