I am picking up a car in Prague and dropping off in Budapest in May. Easily the best quote I could find was with Auto Europe. Their one way drop off figure was substantially less than the other quotes I got. Sosme agencies have a problem with taking a car into Italy so you will need to check that out.

You'll find most agencies won't allow it - even taking an Eastern-European registered car into Italy itself is a no-no for many, let alone leaving it there. If you do find one that allows it, the drop-off fee will be sky-high, as someone has to drive it all the way back to Czech Republic, or the car has to be put on a transporter. Your best bet, if you need a car in Czech Republic, is to drop it off in Bratislava, travel to Italy by train (usually via Vienna), and pick up another for your last leg to Rome. Book in advance to get the best price.

ditto Alec,

Any reasons for not taking the train to Italy?

Wow you folks are just as helpful as my friends on the Africa forum! What we want to do is land in Prague from Los Angeles. spend a couple of nights then go to Karlovy Vary in the northwestern part of Czech republic then go down to the Lake District of Italy. We will then have some relatives join us for a tour of Italy.

There are one way rentals available but the taxes are four times the actual rental cost.

Alternatives seem to be take the train from Prague to Karlovy Vary and back then fly to Milan on Easyjet or take train from Karlovy Vary over the border to Germany then rent a car there or take plane or train down to Italy.

Thoughts?

Thanks,

Kevin
