Just thought I'd add these photos from St. Barth -- Caribbean but still part of France. Photos were taken in 1976 -- our last trip before the birth of our first son, after which we didn't travel outside the US for 18 years.
St Barth is a big tourist attraction now, but in 1976 there was only one small hotel and only a handful of phones on the entire island. We flew in on an 8-seat plane. To contact someone, you left a message at the "library" (in someone's home). Every couple of days we would stop by to see if there were any messages.
We stayed with friends who had a house there -- their parents had bought a small place years before. There was one "fancy" restaurant, but we had to order a day in advance for them to get the recipe ingredients. Meat was hard to find, so we packed a bunch of steaks in dry ice and carried them with us on the plane. For fresh produce, we went to the "farmer" who sold tomatoes and lettuce grown on boxes on tables. (See photo) There was a market in Gustavia (the capital town in the aerial photo), but nothing was fresh...all shipped in. Fresh bread was baked each day by an old woman in ovens in her backyard. (I thought I had a photo of her but can't find it.)
Photos were taken with film and are 2014 scans of the 1976 slides, so the sharpness and color are so-so.
We took a day-trip to Guadeloupe that was fantastic.
