We had a grammar Nazi at work who constantly corrected people. He would especially go after anyone who said fortay and not forte. He soon sounded like a boorish pompous ass. He might have known grammar but neither tact nor kindness were in his vocabulary. So I waited until the next time he jumped on someone for saying fortay and produced an article from the grammar gods who now decree that since everyone says fortay then fortay is now acceptable. A few months later we fired his ass. Good riddance!

One day one of the newbies who registers to top a old thread will kindly come back and tell us how he/she found the thread. I'm very curious how/where all these old threads appear. What does one google to find them?

All I can say is "good for you!"
This is an old post, but I enjoyed reading it again. I was just thinking that the French probably expect Americans to pronounce words differently. I am quite sure that French people would have a hard time speaking some American words too, especially to people in the Redneck sticks of East Texas.

Well said, quokka.
Some people say the most thoughtless and stupid comments. Reminds me of this jerk from a few days ago (but at least he did understand how to apologize):
In a closed door House GOP meeting Thursday, Indiana congressman and gubernatorial candidate Mike Pence likened the Supreme Court's ruling upholding the Democratic health care law to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, according to several sources present.
He immediately apologized.
"My remarks at the Republican Conference following the Supreme Court decision were thoughtless. I certainly did not intend to minimize any tragedy our nation has faced and I apologize," Pence said in a statement to POLITICO.
