You guys are all so creative! We adopted our doggie from the Humane Society a few years ago. He is a German shepard/lab mix (a mutt and I love him to pieces!) and we ended up sticking him with the pathetic name of Rufus (long story) because we couldn't come up with anything better that we both agreed on!
TexasAggie, he's darling! Have you came up with a name yet?

Oops...sorry! I just seen that you hadn't named him yet. Well that's okay...these important decisions take time!
I'm not much older than you are (I just turned 27) and I still get carded enough. I guess one day I will be flattered but until then it gets rather annoying!

We named our big hound mix Mali after the country - we never traveled there, but we adopted her last year when my son was in 3rd grade preparing for the Standards of Learning tests in Virginia - the country of Mali is a big part of the curriculum.

TexasAggie - Great photo of the both of you. For some reason I pictured you to be older.
My cat Madison wasn't named after a foreign locale but I love the story of how I named him. I was in Madison County, Iowa at the Roseman Bridge - as featured in the movie "The Bridges of Madison County." In the cornfields there was a tiny kitten barely 6 weeks old all by itself. To make a long story short I brought him home with me on the plane. I thought all I had to do was have him in a carrier that fit under the seat in front of me. I didn't know I needed a health certificate from the vet as well as pay for him. Because I didn't realize I was doing anything wrong, I boarded the plane in Des Moines with the kitten, flew to St. Paul, got on that plane. Not one flight attendant asked me for any kind of paperwork.
I named him Madison. The following year, Winterset Iowa ran a front page article on him, along with a picture.
He's 7 1/2 years old now and going strong. He's a pistol and the most loving cat in the world.

How fun! Why did we think we were the only ones? We have a cat named Killybeg (a harbor in Ireland), a Scottie named Talisker (distillery on Skye). We once named a golden retriever Hamish MacInnes (Scottish climber) and called him Mac.

She's a female, LoboMau.
TexasAggie, I was just thinking..."Vita" (life) actually sounds like it could be a name. It is easy to say and hear, so may meet the dog-test, and your dog wouldn't feel bad about beinbg names for some far-off place that you go off and enjoy WITHOUT her.

Four pets.....
Buster (full name Buster Brown) -- black & brown mini Pin. He's a senior with lots of health problems now.
Kinder (German for child or baby) -- light brown mini Pin. She's a senior with some health issues.
Mercedes (named for her eyes) -- tabby cat. She's a senior but still goes out to stalk things
Makena (named for a town in Maui near where we were married ) -- he's my 'baby', our Abyssinian cat. My second choice was going to be Sydney (as in Australia).
IF we got another cat, we would try to pick a name from New Zealand. Although we like Kaikoura, we think it's too long. So on our last visit (in Dec) we decided Kiora (as in the greeting) might work
Congrats on your puppy!

CapeCodShanty: A Portuguese water dog? I've never met one. Last year I took "waht kind of dog are you" quiz that was posted on the Internet. After anwering questions about various personality traits, I was told I'd be a Portuguese water dog. I hope that's good!
Then a few weeks later I took the test again, giving the same or similar answers, and I was a Shetland sheep dog. I'll try to find the quiz if anyone's interested.

Hi everyone,
Happy to report that our puppy does have a name, finally! We tried out several this weekend and she took to "Dolce" very well. And it is very fitting, she is about the sweetest little ball of fur I've ever met (spoken like a proud fur-parent, I know ;-) ).
Thank you all so very much for your stories and suggestions, this turned into such a delightful thread.
