Could someone tell what to expect from the bars/pubs in Croatia? What and where are some good places to get a drink at night? Are the people welcoming to americans in the bars/pubs. What are the women like?

Don't shoot the messenger, but I was told by someone who has worked in Croatia that in the ex-Yugoslav republics, "all white women are Russian prostitutes." Also, if you're American, they'll try to rip you off.

If you're young, the safest places would probably be student pubs. Otherwise, I don't know. I've just heard lots of negative things, so be careful.

What it means "all white women are Russian prostitutes? All croatian women are white (its in the midlle of Europe not Africa) and i think russian prostitutes are too busy in their own countries to spread bussines in others.
Croatian people are very friendy and Youll find a lot of difernt bars around. Its crowded mostly in the morning (when croatians enjoy in caffe and chatting sitting on the squares and streets front of bars, and weekend nights when some of bars becomes a party places. You can choose from small one, realy large on two floors,Irish pubs,cocktail bars, theme bars ( bikers bar,rock bars,) etc, So enjoy Your drink looking well dressed pretty croatian girls around.

to the 'little mermaid': being white and Russian I felt quite offended by your message. I spent two weeks in Istria last year on my own, and had a great time. There are always some asses on the way, but I don't think that it's something particularly Croatian. Most of the people were quite friendly and helpful.
The wine is excellent there, and I found one tavern where they served really nice Chardonnay. I said it to the waiter, and the second glass was 'on the house'. I ended up going there almost every night, and paid half the price for the first glass - the rest was again on the house. But that might not work for you of course, if you're not 'white and Russian' ;-)

The comment was from someone I know who worked there for several years. His female colleagues experienced a lot of harassment, and a lot of it had to do with the prostitution thing. At a business dinner, one of his colleagues was nearly kidnapped by some guy who grabbed her and said that he can pay more. He said that it seemed that a single woman at a dinner table with a lot of business men = prostitute. Again, his observations, not mine.

the "little mermaid" also refers to people in the US South to be "Christian Whiteys", and happy to be away from them.
