I'm confirmed for a large single at Pension Pertschy. However, it is not a non-smoking room. I can change to a small single that is non-smoking ... should i do this, or are the smoking rooms fine?

I assume this depends on whether you are a smoker or a non smoker that can not tolerate smoke.

I think you should be able to make your own decision regarding this.

Thanks. I don't smoke and am not crazy about smoking. However, I requested the large room I did at the specific advice of someone here, so I'm wondering if it's worth it. Can anyone who has stayed in the large single here comment on what it was like with respect to smoke? Pertschy has said there rooms are large and air so the smell is not usually a problem ... I'm wondering if this is true.

I stay at the Pension Pertschy all the time (my next visits are in November and February --- reservations already made). I, too, am a non-smoker and request a large single. Also, I can tell you even if it is a smoking room, you should have no problems. I'll bet you don't even notice any difference. The few smaller single rooms are not as nice as the larger ones. It is a super place to stay in Wien! Location, staff, and price can't be beat.

Thanks. I think you were the person who suggested the large single - I appreciate that advice. I could always try to move if it becomes a real problem or just open the door or a window or something.

We stayed in a large room that I believe was a smoking room and had no problems. We are non-smokers as well, but I don't even recall it being an issue.

Stranger was the sight of the hotel attendant smoking in the lobby! I'm young enough (27) that I don't really recall the days when smoking was allowed in many public places, so when we visited Vienna (our first mainland Europe trip) I was surprised by the sight of the woman smoking as she looked up our reservation. It didn't really bothered me, just surprised me, although in retrospect I should have expected those things.

But anyways, I think you should be fine. I personally would take the larger room. You could always crack a window or ask to change rooms if it smells too much of stale smoke.
