Parking Venice/Mestre
I posed the question several months ago about parking in Venice. Because it is my own car (picked up new on European Delivery) I am concerned about security. I decided I would park in Mestre.

In a worst case scenario, I now learn that my insurance will not pay for the loss of my car if I cannot produce all sets of keys issued to me on delivery.

I know that some of the lots (particularly in Venice) require that you leave your keys in the car which I would rather not do. Does anyone know a lot in Venice or Mestre that does not require you to leave your keys in the car or with them?

The Autorimessa Comunale, which is the big parking garage on Piazzale Roma, did not ask to keep my keys. You can also reserve a parking place and prepay with your credit card. Then just arrive at the garage, show them the approval and reservation they will e-mail to you, and in you go.

Adam,

I know where you're coming from - my Dad drove us in our new (small) bimmer down to Venice many years ago. He was so worried about having our new car stolen from the garage...

Well, he had to laugh when we got to the big garage at Piazzale Roma: it was chockablock full of BIG Mercedes and Bimmers, not to mention Rolls Royce! So unless you're driving a brand new Lamborghini (and even then), I wouldnt be too worried

Thanks for the responses.

Wayne, when did you park there? I e-mailed Autorimessa Communale recently and they said I had to leave the key in the car.

Is the place so big that you could "accidently" forget to leave your key in the car and they would never know?

Gosh, I don't know whether the attendant forgot, or whether the rules changed. All I remember is that in June of 2001, I parked a Renault minivan near the top floor, following their directions, and took the keys. No one asked me for the keys. I agree that it appears from their web site that you have to leave the keys; but even if you do, it's a very secure place. I don't believe you have any reason for concern.

Hi Adam:

Have been to Venice by car several times. Have always parked in the covered structure at Isle Tronchetto (follow the well marked road signs as you get into Venice. Don't go as far as Piazzale Rome). Rate last October was $15 US per day. You lock your car and take the keys. We even leave unnecessary luggage locked in the trunk during our stay in Venice, with no problems. Easy access to vaporettos that take you into the main part of the city. Some hotels give you discount coupons that save a few euros; ask at the reception.
Have a good trip. Ciao, Chet
