Parking and early departure in Florence

Have a 7:30 AM flight out of FLR and need to drop off rental car at the airport.

So I would have to leave around 5 AM. While hotels offer parking for about 20 euros, it seems someone would have to retrieve the car for you and they won't do that until at least 8 AM?

One alternative is to stay in Novoli area where there are hotels with parking. They're about 3 km from the town though.

Would it not be possible to drop your car off at the aiport before you enter Florence? It is not a place you need a car, by any means and it is considerable hassle.

I would turn in the car as soon as you get to Florence and then take a taxi to make your early morning flight. Taxi either to or from airport into Florence centro is 20-30 minutes and I believe it ran about 20 euros each way last year.

Doh, make sense.

Actually, my car rental would be the same whether I return the eve before my departure or on the morning of my departure.

But in order to park it, I'd have to pay about 20 euros anyways.

Or like I said, stay at a hotel way out. But that's not appealing.

Hi S,

Drop your traveling companion at the hotel with the luggage.

Drive to the airport, drop car.

Take bus back to town.

Actually, I can return the car the afternoon before the flight at Borgo Ognissanti.

Then I don't have to worry about parking.

How does ZTL work?

If I was returning the car in the city and I wanted to check into the hotel first, to drop off my baggage, and then drive on to the car rental office at Borgo Ognissanti, hotels are telling me I have to give them the car plates so that they can tell the authorities?

I guess there are photo cameras and unless the car is exempted, there will be a ticket issued?

Would the car rental agency be able to get the car exempted as well?

Check this post.

Look at the hand-drawn map.

According to other posts, some agencies are in the red zone and they would get the car exempted.
