If I remember correctly, the RER-C line is under SNCF management and not RATP. I tried in the past to find information on RATP website regarding going to Versailles but no luck (at least not on the English version).
The price for the RER ticket is about €5 roundtrip. Here's Rick Steves' website about getting to Versailles:

The schedule can be found on SNCF's website. You have to punch in the time you plan to travel, and it will spit out the actual time schedule:

Hi Sam-
The section of RER C between Gare d'Austerlitz & Invalides is currently closed until Aug 22, and there is a shuttle bus running between the 2 stations instead. There is a recent thread about it, and the bus sounded like a pain in the neck. But if you are going after Aug 22 (and hopefully the work will be done as they promised), then you can surely take the RER from Gard d'Austerlitz.
