Paris train station to Rue Monge
We will be arriving on a Monday evening by train from Belgium and wonder what is the best route to our hotel, the Residence Monge at 55, Rue Monge- any suggestions, anyone familiar enough with the areas and mode of transport there? We are first time visitors and wonder if we should tackle the bus system in what may be late evening or are the taxis very expensive? Youall are great on here and so helpful, I will thank you in advance for any and all aid.

leslie - the cab from Gare du Nord to Residence Monge is about 10 euros. I did the trip in September in reverse and we departed from Gare du Nord, I suspect you will arrive at the same one. The taxi stand is outside the door. Have the name and address of the hotel on a piece of paper (or the map from their website) to show the driver. Have fun - Paris is a great place to visit!

We stayed at that same hotel last July! The Place Monge stop on the # 7 metro line is very close (Jussieu is also close). If you're looking to save a little money, I would take the metro. We used the metro the whole time in Paris and had no problem. From what I had read, it is much better than using taxis or the bus system, and it worked for us.

Yeah - don't be badgered into using a taxi if something else will work as well for you. If you have a transit pass, the trip will be essentially free of cost.
The N° 47 bus goes directly from Gare de l'Est (down a block from Nord) to within a half block of your hotel. But the buses go on evening schedule at about 20h30, and there isn't service to Monge then, so that might not work for you.
You can also take the RER B (train) to St-Michel Notre-Dame and transfer to Métro Ligne 10 (Direction Austerlitz) and ride to Cardinal Lemoine. This will work up to well past midnight.

Residence Monge is just about at the i near the bottom of the map.

How did you come to that? I know I have mentioned it in another thread.
His name comes up on the AOL boards about every 3 months--usually posted by someone who has never posted before (often with the initials, JM) and extolling the virtues of this exceptional human being who appeared at the door of CDG to take them to Paris. They stop at an exchange place where they get 2X as many Euros per dollar than anywhere else, and on and on. Everyone guffaws and it all quiets down.
Last fall I was talking to a friend who had been to France and lo and behold, WHO was their van driver than Jacques Misery!!! He ran out of gas, the van broke down, the woman's husband and their friend had to help push it somewhere--and on and on. I was laughing hysterically by the time she finished--and then told her the saga of the message boards.
DO NOT hire misery.
Why don't you train to where you want to go and hire a taxi in the town? Where do you want to go.
It would probably be better to start a new thread asking that question.
