Paris to Italy

Aiming for about 10 days. Paris to Amalfi Coast/Postiano. We originally wanted to stop somewhere in between but we really wanted to make sure we were able to relax since it’s our honeymoon. Are there any day trip areas within the areas you guys could suggest ?

You looking for stops en route to Italy say if going by train or flying to Italy?

You could take overnight train Paris to Venice and then trains via Rome to Naples, etc. For rail info www.thello.com for night train; www.seat61.com; www.budgeteuropetravel.com and www.ricksteves.com.

Switzerland for a few days in the Interlaken area would be easy - about half-way by trains to Rome.

10 days? Best to spend a few in Paris, then fly to Naples and spend rest on Amalfi Coast.

Exactly what Sassafrass says. There has never, for geographical reasons mostly, been an easy way to get between most parts of France and most parts of Ialy, never mind Paris to the Amalfi.

An overnight train on a honeymoon doesn't sound like any fun to me. Neither does driving. Make it easy on yourselves and enjoy Paris, then fly to Naples, enjoy the Amalfi, and fly home from Naples.

10 days? Honeymoon? Just go to Paris and Positano and fly between the two. You'll lose most of a day traveling.

If you have to go to Rome to fly home, you'll need to spend the last night in Rome or near FCO. If you can fly home from Naples, depending on the departure time, you may want to spend the last night in Naples or hire a driver to pick you up in Positano and take you to the airport.

There are lots of day trip options by train from Paris. Versailles, Giverny, Chartres, etc. Day trips from Positano are a bit less straight-forward using ferries, buses, taxis, trains, sometimes in combination. Capri (you might even want to spend a night or two there), Pompeii, other Amalfi Coast towns, Naples.

But if a primary goal is to relax, don't feel you must do lots of excursions from either place. Maybe one from each...? Ten days will go by very fast...

I agree with just splitting between Paris and the coast. I'm here now and we liked Capri a LOT better than the Amalfi coast. Just as beautiful and easier to navigate. We had a private driver for a day on the Amalfi coast - recommended to me years ago by a beloved Fodorite, LoveItaly. It was a great day, but I would fly from Paris to Naples and take the ferry to Capri. Enjoy however many days you want to stay there. If you want to see the Amalfi coast, I highly recommend the private driver who can take you along to ooh and ahh and have lunch and then take you back to your Naples hotel to fly home. IMO that would be a perfect honeymoon!

Sounds like fun to me (subjective of course)- get private double and bring any food or drink aboard - like I've said in other threads honeymooning friends of mine long ago claims their first child was conceived on the Paris to Venice night train!

But yes overnight trains for many are no fun - but many here also say they liked them.

Studies have shown that the motion of the team makes it easier to conceive. I’ll try and find a link.

Many people find train travel sexy, and sex preferable to sleep.

See whole new future in marketing of night trains.

St Cirq- taken zillions of night trains and always slept as apparently did most others in my couchettes

so when you say automatically that folks won't sleep that is based on your experience -presumably one and no more and not others.

Everyone is different.

I wouldn't want to be testing any of these theories on my honeymoon.

This thread has gotten too funny -- we too loved the Paris-Venice night train, but our children were about grown and there were no surprises. If you do France - Italy, by all means fly, 10 days is not long with the minimum of 5 & 5 (we flew Paris-Rome, getting to Amalfi is not the easiest). Happy Honeymoon!!!!

I am leaving Italy now. Excellent train service. But to have more time in Venice we chose to fly to the next location and were glad we did. Saved time. Inexpensive on EasyJet.
