I have it from a chambermaid's mouth, albeit an English one. She says that tips are shared where she works.
She says that you only have a limited time to do your rooms, so it's appreciated if guests leave the room as clean and tidy as they can. Real cleaning is done between guests and it's nice if with longer residents, you just need to make the bed and have a quick wipe round.

Please don't single out a few and then use a wide brush to stereotype ALL American's. There have been American's, like myself and NukeSafe, that posted that we disagree with this whole tipping issue in Europe / France. And that we follow local customs when we travel.
Please take those of us into account and not stereotype ALL American's! Just because 4 or 5 on this thread are vocal they don't speak for or represent all of us.
This thread is a group of pretty much all the same people arguing back and forth. Like I said, a handful of American's (4, 6 ?) do not represent anyone but themselves.

[I try to use gender-neutral language when describing occupational groups, but I have never encountered a male doing room-cleaning in hotels. So I will relax about my use of personal pronouns.]
I propose the following test: ask yourself if a hotel maid will feel hard done by if you do not tip her. My belief is that the answer is no. She does not expect tips.

Elizzie, agree, and apoligize to the less vocal, more sane American posters.. I know you exist and most Americans are probably more similar to you then like some of the more strident ones.
Just like "all Canadians are so easygoing ".. we know they are not all like that.. lol

I appreciate that you see and understand what I'm saying.
It makes my skin crawl sometimes when I see some of the posts from fellow American's. But, I also remember that the vast majority of people do not visit and post on Fodor's or Trip Advisor. So, I realize that there are a few that speak but they can't possibly speak for the masses who don't visit these travel forums.
Some just need to have a place to go to pound their chest

Seattle just made it more difficult to decide about tipping in the US.
In most of the US serving staff and maids are so underpaid, with no paid holidays or sick leave, no healthcare, and no retirement provisions that it's sacrilege and callous not to tip generously.
But...
Here in Seattle minimum wages were just increased in steps to $15/hour in a few years.
A *few* restaurants started paying that (or higher) at the getgo, increased their prices, and asked for no tipping.
In others, it's business as usual, please tip.
It's getting harder and harder to decide what's expected (and what's moral). ... (And it took lots of time for me to get used to leaving tips at cafeterias and serve-your-self fast food and coffee house places.) Decisions, decisions, decisions

No one represents anyone but themselves. But, when it comes to local customs the locals have a huge amount of respect in my eyes about 'their customs'. What an outsider and non local has to say holds no water for me. Locals shouldn't be yelled at, disputed, put down, fought with about their local customs, imo.

So.. you actually believe that other nationalities feel inferior to Americans.. you really believe it.. oh my, you have drank the koolaid my dear. This is a prime example of American arrogance( not exhibited by all Americans..but the ones that do ,, well they really do)
I don't think many if any nationality feels inferior to Americans.
Everyone.. even if from a war torn poverty stricken land loves their homeland. They may be sad about how things are going there.. they may need to escape it.. but if you ever talk to any immigrants they will still wax on about the love of their country, and their culture.
And as for all the western countries.. since they are not war torn or poverty stricken, not only are most unlikely to feel inferior to America.. but many will likely feel superior to you.
I don't think everything about or in Canada is perfect. Its not. Just like everything in America is not perfect, but I am would not want to live in your country. The gun laws, the divide between political parties, the crime, the horrible medical system, and colleges that are so expensive families actually have to remortgage their homes to put their kids through school.
Frankly,, if I was going to live somewhere else I would choose somewhere with a higher standard of living then Canada or the States .. like New Zealand, Sweden, Switzerland, Australia, or the Netherlands.. all higher rated by the way then America.
See Canada is not perfect.. but its a hell of a lot better to ME.. then States.. and apparently you feel the same about your country.. I expect that.. but what is nasty is assuming other countries feel inferior to you.. that's sad.
