DebitNM, none of these restaurants are dressy. We'll see what others say but casual seems fine at any of these.

Meant to add that we had a very mediocre meal at Chez Jenny.

Debit L'Ange 20 suffers badly from being shortened.

L'Ange 20 is a wordplay and can mean
: from Anjou (angevin): french province
: ange vingt (twenty, ok)
: ange vin (angel wine)

(ok the third one may have been unintentional and only comes to mind of alkies).

Just remember that there is not a wall separating you from crossing to other arrondissements.
Most times, it's just a simple matter of walking a block or so or taking the Metro...
The best boeuf bourguignon I've found in Paris was at Chez Dumonet in the 6ème. Half-portions are available if you don't want to share.

I agree, I hope you're not limiting yourself to the 4th. Some of my favorite spots, especially for lunch because they are a great way to go to a very nice place for a better value... Les Ombres, on top of Musee Quai Branley in the 7th. Book on thefork.com and maybe get a discount. Excellent food and a fantastic view in "the shadow" of the Eiffel Tower. Truffes Folies, also in the 7th (40% discount on thefork.com) has amazing truffle dishes. If I go to heaven it will smell exactly like Truffes Folies. La Table d'Eugene in the 18th for lunch gets you a 1 Michelin star meal for a reasonable price. Excellent food, wonderful service in this little out of the way place you'd never get to otherwise. And of course, for me no trip to Paris is complete without a meal at L'Ami Jean. Bookings are a must.

DebitNM: definitely casual dress in L'Ange20, although it's okay to dress up fancy if you like. It's just a common bistro, don't let its good reputation scare you

Best make reservations. Last I wanted to go to L'Ange 20 it was overfull. Same with les paipilles, but I didn't like the welcome there (we European still have a sense of customer service) but maybe the guy had just too much on his plate.

I've had reservations for quite some time; it's my birthday, so I wanted to be sure we get a table.

We just had two wonderful meals at L'Ange 20 and Le Bistrot de l'Oulette. Tonight we went to Auberge Bressane and I was very disappointed with the coq au vin -- it was very tasteless, with not much sauce, and served with pasta (I much prefer it with potatoes). My husband did like his chicken in yellow wine sauce.
We are looking forward to getting back to Chez Dumonet -- loved their duck confit last time and but am eager to try their bouef bourginon this time.

I don't think so. The name came about because the original restaurant was on rue Geoffroy L'Angevin (near Rambuteau metro), so it was just a play on the name of that street (which is a person's name), and to complete the gimmick, that restaurant only had 20 seats.

One more unintended (?) pun on l'Ange 20:

In statistical physics, a Langevin equation (Paul Langevin, 1908) is a stochastic differential equation describing the time evolution of a subset of the degrees of freedom.

Chez Janou
2 Rue Roger Verlomme, 75003

Very good, informal neighborhood restaurant. Order the chocolate mousse dessert — they bring an entire pot of it, dish some out for you onto your plates ... and then leave the entire pot. Yum!

I looked at L'Ange 20's website. They use a symbol consisting of a bunch of grapes with wings, so the intended pun is for wine angel, not an obscure physicist.

Chez Janou does not leave the bowl on your table any more. It was considered to be unsanitary - people would use their own spoons to take more mousse. Thé owner also considered it to be too costly to leave on the table.

L'Ami Jean leaves a big bowl of rice pudding on your plate. What you don't take they send home with you in a sac pour le chien. It's is the best breakfast ever!

L'Ange 20 - it was all I'd hoped for; best meal we had on trip [the Taste of Paris, excellent and fun, doesn't count as a meal IMHO].

2 couples --

We started with:King prawns wrapped in angel hair pasta, homemade guacamole, mixed greens [2 orders]
Plats:
1- Duck in two ways : the grilled breast and duck pastilla with piquillos pepper Zucchini fondue
2- Guinea fowl breast with coppa ham mozzarella and sun dried tomatoes like a cordon bleu « gratin dauphinois
3- Seven hour lamb fondant, sauteed potatoes [2 orders]
Dessert -
Café gourmand - which consisted of a bit of rice pudding with diced mango, creme brulee, coconut slivers with white chocolate, Caramelized apple on homemade shortbread
With a bottle of wine, our share was 75 euros.
HIGHLY RECOMMEND; Make reservations!!

Sorry, I can't post pictures...

(And FYI - per the waiter, when I asked about name agreed with "The name came about because the original restaurant was on rue Geoffroy L'Angevin (near Rambuteau metro), so it was just a play on the name of that street (which is a person's name), and to complete the gimmick, that restaurant only had 20 seats.")
