The fad can't last much longer because the vast majority of people has now been convinced that it is a completely lame and disrespectful thing to do.

In any case, the Passerelle des Arts is closed as of tomorrow until June 9th.

I would not underestimate, kerouac, the number of morons on the planet that are oblivious to the fact that what they do is lame and disrespectful.

The really dumb ones have not even heard that love locks exist. The slightly dumb ones, if they heard that love locks exist, can certainly also hear that they are not cool anymore.

I return to the word "oblivious". But I hope you're right.

As we say in Italy, "The mother of idiots is always pregnant." (La madre dei cretini è sempre incinta.)

About time.

I was a bit shocked recently in Cologne when I saw that they sell these padlocks at the tourist office.

NewbE: "..a global epidemic of stupid and ugly"

What an excellent line.

yeah, I read there was some German city who was promoting it out of stupidity (tourism folks). Deutschebahn wasn't to ban it and cut them off as they apparently manage the bridge, but had to relent out of "public opposition." what public, I don't know as it's only the tourists who would object except for vendors selling locks. That's the only place where I read some official entity was actually promoting it to attract tourists.

It only took them 6 years to realize the kudzu on bridges are ugly and not a symbol of love. Love doesn't need keys or chastity belts. I wonder if all those keys are a danger to the fish and the balance of the river bed.

When we were in Salzburg this past winter there was a jeweler within site of the bridge which was selling at least four different kinds of locks; engraving was extra.

I'm hoping since most museums are banning them-the selfie stick may be on the way out. Saw my first one in DC recently. Sorry but they look totally lame.

No, the selfie sticks will be here until the introduction of miniature personal drones that will fly around people's heads wherever they go.

And Chanel (I think? or was it Bulgari?) did an advertising spread on the bridge which is in glossy magazines as we speak.

I think the locks should go but all the 'stupid ignorant tourist' talk above is so snotty and really...where is your evidence that tourists are responsible for all of the locks?

You can still get lox in the Marais, but you'll have a devil of a time trying to get it to stay put on the bridges...slippery stuff, lox.

Those ads you see - print, film, TV - were produced at least a year ago, probably much longer than that. No advertising agency in its right mind would use one of those bridges for a backdrop now.

Proof that the locks are finally coming down: http://i450.photobucket.com/albums/q...lock%20016.jpg

There were so many journalists on the bridge that it didn't even look closed at first.

Must be a result of the fodors lobbying campaign. Gee I won't get to see them when I go to Paris at the end of July. Tant pis pour moi.

Selfie sticks are cumbersome to use and make one look ridiculous, so it seems to me that they will fade from view faster than locks. In the meantime, let people put up the stupid locks and allocate funds to take them down monthly, or weekly, or whatever. The futility of the gesture will sink in eventually.

From the Toronto Sun:

"A couple of tourists from Washington DC turned up unaware of the padlock ban.

"We came with the idea of putting a lock but we found out it's closed and illegal now - so we are just going to put it here at the very end of the bridge so no one can see," Cathy Hominage told Reuters TV."

Sigh.

The Guardian has a good piece: http://www.theguardian.com/world/201...e-with-eyesore

Selfie sticks - the ultimate in narcissism.
